From the President’s Desk
“Marley was dead, to begin with.” This is the opening line to my
favorite story at Christmas. Of course it does not come close to His
story that we celebrate this time of year, the birth of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. But I am partial to Charles Dickens. My favorite
movie version is “Scrooge” with Alastair Sim, my wife prefers the
George C Scott version, but I enjoy them all, even the one with Mr.
Magoo.
My point is not to go on about why I love “A Christmas
Carol”, but to bring out a point that is further on in the
story.
After Scrooge’s nephew leaves Bob Cratchit lets in two portly gentlemen
looking for donations to “make some slight provision for the poor and
destitute, at this festive season of the year”. To which
Scrooge
sends the men on their way without even a pence.
Let us fast
forward to Christmas 2009 and consider those who are less fortunate
than us at this “festive time” of the year, as the gentlemen called it.
Last year instead of buying presents for our adult family members, we
bought chickens. Live ones! They were for families
in other
countries less fortunate, who had real needs. There are
several
organizations that offer this and you can choose one. But
there
is another worthy organization that we should support – The Homeschool
Foundation. This organization is part of HSLDA, and gives
grants
and support to homeschool families that are in need. The
foundation provides funds to families who may have experienced the loss
of a parent or the loss of a job. They do this so that the
family
may purchase curriculum and continue to homeschool.
Consider
giving to The Homeschool Foundation, in memory of someone who recently
died or in honor of recent homeschooler, maybe a simple donation that
will help someone who you may never meet. You can learn about them at
http://www.homeschoolfoundation.org/ .
Continue to pray for
ENOCH at this time. Plans for the next convention are already
in
the works and we need more board members as well as
volunteers.
We could not function without your help. If God puts it on
your
heart to serve with ENOCH, feel free to contact me directly at
pres.enochnj@yhoo.com.
From my family to your family – may you have Blessed Christmas and a
Happy and Healthy New Year!

Encouraging Words
Christmas: A Call to Remember

By
Richard (Dick) Innes
In
his book, A Room Called Remember, Fredrick Buechner tells about the
great snowfall in New York City in the winter of 1947. At first it
seemed no different from any other snow storm. The flakes gently
floated down without any wind to drive them. All day they fell.
Gradually the sidewalks, parked cars and buildings were covered with a
blanket of white. Streets became slushy. Shopkeepers were out with
their shovels trying to keep clear a path to their doors. And the snow
kept falling. The plows couldn’t keep ahead of it. Consequently, the
traffic nearly came to a standstill. Businesses closed early and people
did their best to get home before nightfall.
By the next morning
bustling New York was a totally different city. Abandoned cars were
buried. Nothing on wheels could move. Skiers glided gracefully down
Park Avenue. The most striking transformation, however, was the
silence. The only sounds were muffled voices and the ringing church
bells. People listened because they couldn’t help themselves. And our
world rarely listens anymore—whether in New York or Toronto, London or
Los Angeles, Sidney or Singapore—unless a crisis of sufficient
magnitude thrusts a wrench into the wheels of our high-speed,
technological society and forces us to a standstill.
Except,
perhaps, as Buechner points out, at Christmas time when it’s hard not
to stop and listen. Business increases to a frenzied pace. Canned
carols blast out over the din of traffic. Bells jingle. Red-robed
Santas freeze in Chicago, while their counterparts fry in Melbourne.
Then, suddenly, night falls on Christmas Eve. The last shop closes. All
the hullabaloo stops. Everything is silent—for one brief day.
This
year don’t miss the silence. Take time to listen. Be still and hear the
true message of Christmas which, above all, is a call to remember that
God has not forgotten us, but is vitally involved in the affairs of
mankind. Two thousand years ago he came to earth in person to save us
from our sins.
So as Christmas rapidly approaches, may I
encourage you to pause for just a moment and hear God’s Word: "The
virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will
call him Immanuel—which means, ‘God with us.”
And again, "An
angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of
David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is
conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son,
and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people
from their sins.’"
One of the great tragedies of our time is not that God has forgotten
us, but that we have forgotten him.
On
the same day that Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Russian-born Nobel Prize
winner, was presented with the Templeton Foundation Prize for Progress
in Religion by HRH Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace, he addressed
many of Britain’s leading political and religious leaders, including
the Archbishop of Canterbury.
"Over half a century ago,"
stated Solzhenitsyn, "while I was still a child, I recall hearing a
number of older people offer the following explanation for the great
disasters that had befallen Russia: ‘Men have forgotten God, that’s why
all this has happened.’"
"And if I were called upon to identify
the principal trait of the entire twentieth century," Solzhenitsyn
continued, "I would be unable to find anything more precise and pithy
than to repeat: ‘Men have forgotten God’."
Besides the onslaught
of godless Communism, among some of the other tragic consequences of
men forgetting God in this century have been World Wars I and II,
followed by the division of Eastern Europe, the Korean, Vietnam,
Mid-East, and endless other wars, growing terrorism, and the threat of
total annihilation through nuclear warfare.
The history of the
Jewish people, and indeed of all the world, has repeatedly shown that
when individuals and nations forget God, they ultimately lead
themselves to self-destruction.
But every year Christmas comes
around to call us to remember God and to turn back to him—as
individuals—to save us from eternal damnation and—as nations—to save us
from self-destruction.
Another great tragedy of our time is
that, instead of recognizing Christmas as God’s call to turn back to
him, people look for a vision or an emotional high or something
electric as a sign of God’s presence. And they miss him. When Christ
came the first time, people didn’t recognize him because he didn’t come
the way they expected him to come either. And they missed not only the
opportunity of a lifetime but also of an eternity!
Don’t miss
Christ’s call to you this Christmas because you don’t have some
experience out of the ordinary. God speaks to us through the ordinary,
and commitment to him is a step of faith based on an act of your
will—with or without any feelings or great flashes of insight.
C.
S. Lewis, one of the great thinkers of this century, was a professor at
Cambridge, a well-known author, an outstanding lecturer and, for many
years, an atheist. He is a good example of a person who made a
calculated, rather than an emotional, commitment to Christ. He said,
"In the Trinity Term of 1929, I gave in, and admitted that God was God
... perhaps the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England."
Christ’s
call to commitment is the same today as it has been for the past two
thousand years: "Come to me all of you who are tired from carrying
heavy loads and I will give you rest."
ENOCH EVENTS
Report on the Annual SG
Leadership Conference
Recently
ENOCH sponsored our Annual Support Group Leadership Conference,
featuring Jim and Vicki Bentley. Jim works for
Parentalrights.org
and Vicki works for HSLDA. Jim spoke at length explaining the Parental
Rights Amendment to the Constitution. Many of the leaders represented
posted various questions to him, Jim did a great job answer the
questions. I encourage you to go to www.Parentalrights.org for further
information.
His wife Vicki spoke encouraging words to the
leaders represented. I wish I could write down everything she
said, because it would be beneficial to all of you. She
talked
about veteran homeschoolers mentoring new families; leaders learning to
delegate responsibilities; avoiding burnout, etc.
Near
the end of the day we had a town hall discussion. This tends to be one
of the highlights of the conference. Everyone joins in the discussion
with encouraging words and new ideas.
It is our goal each year
to encourage those who are in leadership positions when they attend the
annual conference. Please encourage your leaders to attend
next
year! God bless you.
Picture This!

Sue August
Although
the weather has not turned wintery yet, as soon as Thanksgiving has
passed, I started to think about winter. First, the wonderful Christmas
season as we focus on celebrating the birth of
Jesus. As
the New Year begins, my thoughts wander from picturing myself swooshing
down the slopes at an exhilarating speed to picturing myself warming my
hands by wrapping them around a mug of hot chocolate. Both
pictures are immensely appealing! I’m not sure how you
picture
yourself or your family when it comes to wintertime, but you might want
to try picturing yourself gathered with other homeschool families at
Shawnee Mountain in the Poconos.
On January 27-29, homeschoolers
from all over New Jersey (and PA) can ski, snowboard and stay overnight
at steeply discounted rates. This program has something for
everyone! If you've never skied/snowboarded before, just come
for
at least a day trip and give it a try for as little as $52 including
equipment rental and a lesson (regularly priced at over
$100). If
you're already a winter fun enthusiast, come for multiple consecutive
days at even better bargain prices. The deadline for
registration
is Jan. 11, 2010. Walk-in registrations will be accepted at
slightly higher prices.
1 Day Lift: $27 Ski or Board Rental:
$15 Ski or Board Group Lesson: $10
2 Day Lift: $49 Ski or Board Rental:
$24 Ski or Board Group Lesson: $20
3 Day Lift: $67 Ski or Board Rental:
$36 Ski or Board Group Lesson: $30
Area
lodging will welcome homeschoolers when you mention the ENOCH
discount. Options include hotel rooms from $55-$99 or
timeshare
resort condos and townhouses for about $169 per night (sleeps
6).
The timeshare resorts include access to indoor pools, hot tubs and game
rooms. Lodging details will be posted in early January.
Enjoy
fellowship in the lodge with other homeschoolers. We had a
huge
section of the lodge pretty much to ourselves last year with lots of
room for the little ones to run around and play.
For more details, price chart, registration form and FAQs, go to
www.enochnj.org.
Early bird registration deadline is Jan. 11, 2010.
Please
spread the word to all your homeschooling friends. Print the
flier from ENOCH’s website and hand it out or post it where
homeschoolers will see it.
See you on the slopes!
ENOCH is now on Facebook!
If
you have Facebook, be sure to look for ENOCH of New Jersey
page.
We are trying to get the word out. Tell every homeschooler you know.
Become a fan. ENOCH will have links, announcements, stories, etc. that
will be posted to help you.

The Return to Genesis – Mike Snavely

Have
you ever wondered why it's so important to understand the issue of
creation vs. evolution? Mike Snavely expertly lays out the
logic
of needing a firm foundation of understanding the account of creation
in Genesis in order to make sense of the rest of our beliefs as
Christians. The whole family can enjoy this workshop

HSLDA updates/contests
On behalf of HSLDA and
the Klicka family
Several
state organizations have asked about making a donation to the Klicka
family in memory of Chris, specifically asking for a recommendation on
how to designate the gift. I have spoken with Tracy about
this
subject and she informed me that her preference would be for assistance
with the education accounts for their children. Tracy and
Chris
have established college education accounts for the children.
You
may contribute to this education account by making checks payable to
College America, designated for the Klicka Education Account.
Donations should be sent to: The Klicka Family, 6779 Riley
Road,
Warrenton, VA 20187.
On behalf of HSLDA and the Klicka family, we
want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of
love and affection demonstrated by so many leaders in the home school
community. Your support and prayers have been
overwhelming.
Thanks again for all you have done.

A Call to Pens short story competition
Which
students in your homeschool network have a love for writing and
literature? Here’s a chance for you to help those young writers make
their dream a reality. This year, Patrick Henry College is hosting its
second annual A Call to Pens short story competition. Students
nationwide, ages 12-18, are invited to participate by submitting
original short stories that reflect a Christian worldview in a mature,
thoughtful way.
We believe that literature has power to move the
soul – and thus to help revive a degenerate culture. “Writers really
are the unacknowledged legislators of mankind,” says PHC Provost Dr.
Gene Edward Veith, columnist for World Magazine and TableTalk. “Writers
played a major role in bringing down the Soviet Empire simply by
writing stories that changed people’s sensibility… Changing the culture
is a cultural task, and for that we need Christian writers. The A Call
to Pens contest is designed to help raise up those writers.”
The
deadline for the contest is December 30th, 2009. Cash prizes will be
awarded the winners in each division. For more information about the
rules, guidelines, and other pertinent information, please visit
http://www.phc.edu/acalltopens.php. We can’t wait to read your
students’ best creative works.

Teleo Scouts

My
wife and I have been homeschooling our seven children for seventeen
years, and we are passionate about a father’s role and influence in a
well-rounded education, especially in regard to raising boys toward
godly maturity and manhood.
We have observed that many dads are
doing a terrific job at fulfilling their roles as leader and teacher
while acknowledging that various approaches might be
improved. Other dads struggle, for they simply have
not yet
discovered an effective approach to teaching their
boys.
We
have developed a very effective ministerial tool for dads called Teleo
Scouts. Teleo is a Greek word which signifies completion and
well-roundedness. Teleo Scouts is a way for
like-minded men
(usually between two and six) to get together with their sons to do
cool activities that the men plan (activities with skills that the dads
like to do and believe are worth passing down). Teleo Scouts
is
not a youth group, nor is it something dads have to do every
week. In fact, most of the groups that are using it meet only
once or twice a month on their own time.
The
curriculum for Teleo Scouts is Made for Manhood, a book of seventeen
character lessons ranging from “Being Strong and Courageous” to
“Treating Ladies Properly” to “Being a Man of
Conviction.”
The complete chapter headings can be provided to
you. Made
for Manhood can also be used as an individual study for boys without a
commitment to Teleo Scouts. We can send you free chapter
samples
via email upon your request.
If you or other families are
interested in learning more about Teleo Scouts, please contact Kenneth
Knott, Teleo Scouts Founder/Curriculum Director at:
231-539-7773. We would be glad to assist you!

TCHSA
(Tri-County Homeschool Sports Association) is a competitive homeschool
sports league for homeschooled junior high and high school
students. Its goal is to field teams that can compete against
local private schools. In the past, they have had successful
basketball, baseball and softball teams.
By this time,
the basketball teams have been formed and are gearing up for their
season. Come on out and route for the homeschoolers!

Come on out and root for homeschoolers!
Monica
Nowak, age 13, will be playing basketball for TCHSA for the third year
in a row. She says TCHSA is the perfect fit for
her. The
high level of competition against other schools is exactly what she was
looking for. Her coach, Ed Howell, has been coaching the
girls’
basketball team for 7 years. This year, there are 9 girls on
the
team and they are looking forward to a great season.
I asked
Monica to recall a highlight from last year’s basketball
season.
Without question, the high point of the year was “beating Villa
Victoria School, 24-22 in overtime!”
TCHSA baseball and softball
registration will begin in January or early February. If you
have
any questions, contact Ed Howell at 267-918-4180.
