ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

June/July 2009

From the President's Desk

Desk.

Dear Friends,

First, I want to express my deepest appreciation to every homeschooler who attended the 19th Annual Homeschool Convention. So many came to hear the speakers and attend workshops. There was more than enough exhibitors to see throughout the convention floor. Thank you for making it a success for all of us.

Second, I want to thank the many volunteers who helped make this happen. The coordinators especially who work diligently to get their staff together for their departments as well as the various hostesses/hosts, hospitality volunteers, etc. The list goes on. Without you, we could not have pulled it off.

Third, a hearty THANK YOU to the ENOCH Board for their tireless work. Everyone contributed in making the convention successful. My wife and I were happy to have them all. I was grateful to have the Trustees of ENOCH attend and pitch in where needed. It made our lives easier.

I hope you all carried away something in your hearts for yourselves, your families and your school year ahead. There was much practical help given through the keynote sessions and workshops. You can still hear them if you missed one or two or more! ENOCH is offering cds/mp3 files for you to purchase. Visit us at www.enochnj.org for more details.

One thing I love about the convention is getting to see faces of friends and acquaintances I don't get to see all year long. It gives me time to catch up with them; find out how things are going in their world, as well as, in their homeschooling. One woman I've known for as long as I have been homeschooling, is now a grandmother and helping with her grandchildren. It's a blessing to see homeschooling being passed on to the generations following.

If you couldn't find all the curriculum you were looking for at the convention don't forget to check out the GPA SmartStore at www.gpasmartstore.com  or by clicking on the link in this newsletter.  When you register with GPA SmartStore you not only receive a discount, but you also help to support ENOCH.  It is very easy to register: click Login and then click New Member Sign Up Here.  Make sure you to select New Jersey (ENOCH) when it asks you to "Select a State Association."  That's it! You can start shopping.  If you are a member of HSLDA you get even more of discount, so don't forget it put in your HSLDA Membership Number

Next year will be ENOCH's 20th Homeschool Convention. I look forward to this monumental year.  May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you and give you peace.  May you have a wonderful summer in God.

Until September,

Richard Millward

Keep It Alive

convention
By Sue August

I've often heard fellow homeschoolers say that attending the convention is just what they need to propel them into their next school year.  Every year, in some way, God meets them while they are at the convention.  It could be something a speaker says, a conversation with an old friend or a particular book they spot at an exhibitor's booth.  Some meet God while spending time at the ENOCH Prayer Booth or even through the testimony of a stranger they happen upon.

If God has called you to homeschool, He has not called you to do it alone.  He is faithful and will walk with you.  If He can bless you once a year at the convention, there are several ways you can keep that blessing alive.

If God gave you specific direction regarding your homeschooling, take the time to write it down.  Later in the year when you feel like you may have lost your way, take out your journal and remind yourself of God's encouragement to you.  If you think God led you to a particular book or curriculum while you were at the convention, share that with your kids.  Don't let them miss out on the fact that God is directing your homeschool.  Take time with them to thank God for his direction in their lives.

If God showed you something new about homeschooling your family, share it with others.  It may be just the thing someone else needs to hear.  About 1,300 adults attended the convention last month, but we know there are some homeschooling families that were not represented there.  Ask among your friends to see who did not attend the convention.  Spend some time sharing with them any nuggets of truth you learned at the convention.  God may want to use you in the life of your friend!

If you did not get a chance to attend the convention last month, ask around until you find someone who did.  Find out why they invested the time and energy to attend the convention and ask them how God blessed them during that time.

Finally, for those who attended the convention, jot down testimonies to God's glory and share them with your ENOCH family.  During the upcoming school year, we will compile these short testimonies of God's grace to NJ homeschoolers so God's name will be magnified throughout New Jersey.  Email your submissions to newsletter@enochnj.org

Let's keep this once-a-year blessing alive throughout our upcoming school year!

Josphine Teng, who was born in May of 1994, wrote the essay featured below.  We will feature Anna's and Micaiah's essays in future issues.

There are numerous ways to describe friendship and countless definitions for a "good friend." To one person, a true friend may be a close chum who shares the same hobbies. Yet to another, a true friend may be a loyal buddy who's truthful and kind. To me, however, a true friend is more than someone who shares similar interests or who possesses virtuous characters. A true friend is one who points me back to Christ.

Her name is Renee. I have known her for most of my life. She has short black hair that barely passes her chin, a small stature, and a luminous smile. As for her character, Renee is humble, honest, and faithful. In many ways, I was the opposite of Renee. As children, whenever Renee and I played together, I would always grab the more coveted toy for myself. When we played dollhouse, I would take the newer, prettier doll and leave Renee with an old, tattered=2 0one.  When we playacted, I would claim the more prestigious role. For example, when we played imaginary school, I would take the role of the authoritative teacher and leave Renee with the role of the obedient student.  Choosing to be uncaring and insensitive, I refused to give my selfish and dogmatic attitude a second thought. Although I treated her unkindly, Renee seldom complained or pointed out my rude behavior unless I was wronging someone else. During the times when I treated another person obnoxiously, she would gently make me aware of my demeanor. If Renee had been any less of a friend, she might have dropped our relationship and found herself a nicer and more agreeable playmate, leaving me to learn the hard way; nonetheless, she didn't. Despite my flaws, Renee stayed by my side and remained a loyal friend.  All the while, she waited and encouraged me to change.  In a way, Renee reminds me of Jesus. Her humility despite my arrogance, honesty about my demeanor, and loyalty towards our friendship points me back to Christ.

Renee's meekness emulates Christ's humility. Though I grieve Him with my nume rous sins, Jesus still chooses to love me through His humility. Philippians 2:8 states how Jesus showed His meekness. "... He humbled Himself and became obedient to death -- even death on the cross!" Being the King, Jesus did not have to leave Paradise, come to this sinful, warped world, and take on my punishment, but He did. Becoming man, experiencing human pain, and dying a criminal's death demonstrated how incredibly humble He is.

Renee's honesty reflects that of Christ. Several times in the Gospels, He would not hesitate to let people know that they were sinners. Instead of condemning them He told them to "... leave your life of sin" (Matthew 8:11). Just as He was honest with these people, He is truthful with me. Instead of allowing me to continue basking in my sins, He convicted me so that I could see the person that I was. Without Him, I might never have been able to recognize how I hurt others with my selfishness.
Finally, Renee's loyalty mirrors Jesus' faithfulness. I know Jesus' steadfastness in my own personal life. In Matthew 5, Jesus says to "love your enemies" but I struggle with this and do not always love my enemies. In fact, I often find myself hating certain people. In spite of that, He has not forsaken me. By taking my sins on Himself so that I may have eternal life and be with Him forever, Jesus proved Himself to be my most faithful, loving friend. If ever I feel like I'm overwhelmed because of my sins, I can look to Jesus for forgiveness. Moreover, because He died for my sins, He alone can truly enable me to overcome my flaws. He is my truest Friend.

A true friend is one who reflects the ultimate Friend. It was Renee who first illustrated for me what a true friend is and what a friend could be. Although I am constantly making mistakes, Renee did not abandon our relationship.20Of all the things I experienced in our friendship, I value most how she pointed me back to my ultimate true friend, Jesus Christ. By pointing me back to Christ, Renee reminded me that I could change and be more like Christ.

Communicators for Christ

Communicators for Christ
For the first time in history, the touring group of teen speakers from Communicators for Christ will be leading a conference here in NJ - so that your students can learn what they've learned. It isn't enough to be able to speak in public - it must be done with character and competence so that others might know the love of Christ.

Have you pondered how to get started in speech and debate, wondering when and how to get started? We'll have a one-day Beginning Public Speaking Conference for students ages 7 - 11. Students twelve and older can attend either one or both of the Two Day Conferences:

    * Critical Thinking and Debate and/or
    * Public Speaking

Do you pray that your students might get a clearer vision of how they can and why they should impact their culture for Christ?

The Communicators for Christ Conference will teach these things and more. The sessions have both academic lessons and practical activities so that the lessons just learned will be immediately applied.

Pricing and more information can be found at http://www.instituteforculturalcommunicators.org/09events. Registration will open soon and we will be posting information on housing and meal options shortly thereafter.

Please share this email with friends and family you know who may be interested. If you have a question not answered at the above web address, please contact Eunice Au at manusoratorum@gmail.com

RDI intervention for Autism

Autism Ribbon
Hi fellow homeschoolers!
I am a consultant in training for  RDI ( relationship development intervention). RDI is a developmental model for remediating the core deficits of Autism.   I need a supervision family that I take thru the process of developmental stages for the child with ASD. ( I need two but already have one family) I have two children with Autism and have been doing RDI with them with great success. My older
son is in a stage where testing shows him no longer on the spectrum. I contribute this to RDI. Both my sons are progressing beautifully with RDI. The founder of RDI homeschooled his own daughters and basically says the best way to remediate Autism is thru Homeschooling and RDI. He acknowledges not everyone can do that......so he also has many systems in place for the child in school.

I would love to have a supervision family that is homeschooling...and will grant a partial scholarship to the family whom is a good fit. The process is approximately 10 months, 2 hours per month of meetings  with me and then implementing what we talk about in the home according to RDI. Here is the website for more information..... www.rdiconnect.com
