May 2009

From the President's Desk

Calling all Homeschoolers of New Jersey,

Convention Update

ENOCH of NJ’s 19th Annual Homeschool Convention is just around the corner.  If you have not Pre-registered there is still time. Pre-registration closes on May 23rd.  We have a great line-up of Featured Speakers, Phil Downer, Dianne Craft and Carol Barnier.  The convention is a great way to look at and buy new curriculum, be encouraged by great speakers and workshops, and to encourage other homeschoolers and those who are thinking about homeschooling.  Friends of ours, who were homeschooling, encouraged us to attend the ENOCH convention.  This was before our oldest daughter was school-aged.   It was after the Keynote Speaker Ken Ham, Answers in Genesis, spoke Friday night that my wife, Minerva and I decided that there was no other choice but to homeschool.  That year, ENOCH changed us and we have not been sorry. Reach out and encourage others. I hope to see you at the convention.

NHERI Study

First, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the NHERI study. NHERI stands for National Home Educator Research Institute. Brian Ray, President, has been a valuable asset to the homeschool community in the research he does. Now that ENOCH has collected data, it has been sent off to NHERI where they will tabulate and compile the information.  When this is completed they will make the information available to ENOCH and we will make it available to the support groups throughout the state.
The ENOCH Board is grateful to Ray Stoever, Trustee of ENOCH, who volunteered his services to get the work accomplished. He was able to get the information and work on getting it put together for NHERI. Thank you.

Final Word – Prayer Needed

The convention is fast approaching and the Board is very busy. We appreciate your prayers during this busy season. We want the Lord to lead and guide us in every aspect and decision needed for the convention. “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it,” (Psalm 127:1).  This is the biggest outreach we have and it takes a lot of folks to put it together.  I want to thank each of the Board members for their hard work.

Blessings,

Richard Millward
President

Countdown to Convention Weekend

Countdown
By Sue August, Convention Coordinator

In thinking about what to write this month, I went back through my files and found the article below that I had written last year.  How thankful I am that I came across it!  This year, I am the rookie Convention Coordinator.  My attention has been pulled in a thousand directions as I have been learning the ropes.  How kind of God to bring my attention to what I was doing this time last year!  Keep reading to find out how best to prepare for the upcoming Convention, May 29-30.

What a pleasure it has been for me to share my thoughts with you about the Annual Convention!  There is nothing like having to organize my thoughts on paper to help me clarify my own thinking!  I am looking forward to this convention with a level of anticipation I’ve never experienced before!

I am confident that God has great things in store for me and for all those who attend the convention this year.  Here’s how I will spend this last month in preparation.  I will be praying – praying specifically for every aspect of the convention.

I will pray for the Keynote and Workshop Speakers.  They have full and busy lives.  The convention season across America can be particularly taxing on them.  I will pray for God’s strength to be present when they are weak.  I will especially be praying that they will take time to hear from God regarding what He wants them to say to the Homeschool community.  I will attend the keynote sessions and workshops with an expectation of hearing a message filled with God’s leading for my upcoming homeschool year.

I will pray for the Exhibitors.  With money tight, many of the smaller exhibitors are unsure if they will break even this year.  It is not easy nor is it inexpensive, traveling across the country with literally tons of books in tow!  I will pray for God’s mercy for them as they travel.  We have about 30 new Exhibitors this year.  I will pray that their first experience with NJ Homeschoolers will be a rewarding one!  I will also pray that the Exhibitors will be given an extra measure of wisdom and discernment when giving counsel to homeschoolers with questions.

I will pray for the children who have registered for the Children’s Program, that a new love for history will be birthed in them as they learn from the folks at Historical Happenings who have a real passion for glorifying God through history.

I will pray for all the volunteers, from those who have sacrificed the entire convention weekend to those who will be serving ENOCH for just a few hours.

Mostly, I will be praying for you – NJ Homeschoolers!  My prayer is that your calendar will be cleared and will stay clear for May 29-30.  I’ll be praying that God will meet you in a very real way at the ENOCH Convention.  Whether you simply need help choosing curriculum or possibly God wants you to do an entire overhaul of your homeschool, my prayer is that you will know that God has called you to homeschool and that He will not ask you to do anything without providing the grace and means to do it.

Looking forward to seeing you at the convention!  Please stop by the ENOCH booth to say hello!

PROMOTE YOUR EVENT, CLUB OR ACTIVITY AT THE CONVENTION

Spelling Bee
The ENOCH Convention is trying something new this year.  Since ENOCH’s mission is to promote homeschooling in New Jersey and do whatever we can to equip homeschooling families, we have a new feature in our Exhibit Hall.  Booth space is available for homeschoolers to display and/or promote their homeschool events, clubs and activities.

If you organize a science fair, spelling bee, drama club, orchestra, choir, sports league, robotics team, model rocket club, etc., this is your chance to get the word out to NJ Homeschoolers!

If you have an event, club or activity that is open to new members, you can reserve a booth at the convention for only $75.  If your club is filled to capacity but you would like to help other homeschoolers start a club like yours, you would also qualify for this type of booth.

For those clubs who do not have the funds or manpower to rent booth space, we have an alternative that is FREE.  ENOCH is providing a double booth space right near the front entrance.  Your event, club or activity can reserve a 2-hour slot at this booth.  You can set up a display or plan a presentation that can take place during your 2-hour slot.

Homeschoolers, if you’ve wondered which activities will be a good fit for your family, be sure to check the schedule of events as you enter the Convention.

For those who organize events, clubs and activities, ENOCH thanks you for how you serve the homeschool community.  We are glad to partner with you to make your events accessible to even more homeschoolers!  If you think you might be interested in this offer, email conventioncoordinator@enochnj.org  Deadline is May 11.

WE’RE DEPENDING ON YOU!

Volunteer Desk
The date of the annual ENOCH Convention is fast approaching (May 29-30)!  In order to have the convention run smoothly, over 100 volunteers are enlisted every year.  For those of you who have already volunteered, we are very grateful.  Your response has been overwhelming!  We have confirmed about 50% of the volunteers we need.

Our greatest area of need at this point, is for men to work as ushers.  Following is a description of what ushering involves:

1.    Greet attendees at Registration Area & pass out Convention Resource bags.
2.    Will “patrol” the Curriculum Hall at assigned locations.
3.    Patrol assigned location for anything that seems out of order or potentially a problem.  Become very familiar with facility’s layout
4.    If children are not attended by an adult, Usher would instruct them to stay with their parents.  Remind the parents of their need to supervise their children (toddler to youth).
5.    Answer basic questions from attendees and direct them to the ENOCH / Information Table for further assistance [clipboard w/ information provided]
6.    Ushers will be stationed at Used Curriculum to provide order & security.
7.    At end of each workshop session, Ushers should ensure that Keynote workshop area is cleared out and ready for the next session.
8.    Report problems to ENOCH /Information Table right away or in case of an emergency, contact the police officer on duty.

Men, if you think you could offer 3 hours of your time on either Friday or Saturday, please volunteer.

We also need male or female volunteers in the Registration area, Hospitality area and the Used Curriculum Sale.

Please consider helping your statewide homeschool community by volunteering at the convention.  To volunteer, register for the convention and then follow this link to volunteer  https://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/ap?AP=742473282

Keeping Your Teens on the Road to Purity

Audio Lending Library Review

CD Cases
Julie Hiramine challenges teens to use this stage of their life to develop their affection for the Lord.  She offers a sound Biblical argument why teens should save romantic relationships for later.  To order this recording, use this link:  http://www.enochnj.org/index.php/resources/lending_library and request Recording #114.

Although Julie isn’t able to personally attend the ENOCH Convention this year, her organization, Generations of Virtue, will be there.  Be sure to stop by their booth for some great resources!

Other Events and Opportunities

Roller Skating

Roller Skates
I have secured the Cherry Hill Skating Center at 664 Deer Road in Cherry Hill for the 2009 - 2010 school year.

The dates are as follows:
September 18, 2009
October,16, 2009
November 20, 2009
January 15, 2010
February 19, 2010
March 19, 2010
April 16, 2010

Skate Rentals are 3.00 for in line or quads.  Admission is $3 per skater with a cap of 12.00 per family.  We have offered several free admission skates, and a reduced price skate in the past.  If we continue to get such a great turnout that will continue.  Amazingly our price from the rink has not increased in several years.

Please do not bring outside food in as the refreshment stand is open.  We get to control the music being played and as a favor to us all games are off (a source of revenue for the rink) so please be kind enough to consume all food before coming into the rink.  An exception would be cake for a birthday celebration.

Curriculum Fair Thank You!

A warm and sincere thank you to ALL our sellers and shoppers who participated in
this years F.U.N. curriculum sale!! It was a WONDERFUL day! The
sale was our most successful "shoppers" turnout yet, and the feedback was ALL
positive, with happy sellers and shoppers alike.

With the addition of more seminars, the FUN Curriculum sale has become a sort of homey
mini-convention.

Praying you were all blessed and we hope to see you again next year! smile

Homeschool Mom’s ‘Novel Idea’ in Education

Wendy Hunt
It reads like a gripping youth fiction novel, yet challenges young readers to reach to new heights in vocabulary and spelling.  The Orphan and the King, Vol. I—The Freedom Mission is the first in a trilogy that boasts a surprising educational twist.  Each volume in the three-part series comes with a free downloadable vocabulary and spelling study guide.  The extensive 81-page study guide is full-color, illustrated, and reproducible for homeschool and classroom use.  Another free bonus offer that comes with the book is a downloadable video cartooning lesson from Emmy Nominated Cartoonist Bruce Blitz, as seen on Comcast-On-Demand and PBS.  Page 92 of The Freedom Mission gives all the details for how to obtain the free downloads.  In addition, this inspirational fantasy novel weaves foundational biblical principles of faith, hope and redemption into the core story.  The Freedom Mission mixes fantasy and reality into a suspenseful allegory filled with biblical insights and wisdom. When asked how she managed to write a 350 page trilogy while raising and homeschooling three small children, author Wendy Anne Hunt laughs.  “Well, although unconventional, this was my method: When we only had my oldest son, I would take him to McDonald's and let him play for three hours or so (until he got tired of it), and I would type like a banshee. When we had two kiddos, I would drive through a nearby neighborhood until they fell asleep in their car seats. Then I would pull the minivan under a shade tree and type my brains out until they woke up. When we had the three children, my gracious husband would send me out every Wednesday night with my laptop, and I would close out the local Starbucks or Three Bean Cafe. I found that I could make the same 16 oz. latte last for four hours!  So...there's my method in a nutshell. And, that's why this trilogy has taken me 10 years to write!”

Drop by Hunt’s website at WendyAnneHunt.blogspot.com.  You can order her first book, The Freedom Mission, on Amazon.com, or order a copy through your local bookseller or Christian bookstore.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

WENDY ANNE HUNT lives in Southern New Jersey with her wonderful husband and three delightful children. A passion for ‘redemptive writing’ that points others to the cross and the Savior, Hunt is happiest when putting pen to paper, whether writing music, weaving a story, writing poetry, or working on a book in progress. Her hope is that God would use these means to draw the hearts of others nearer to the Lord she loves.

Online Computer Classes

I teach with The Potter’s School from September through May. I decided to offer a couple of the classes I teach this summer. This is independent from The Potter’s School. These classes would be live over the internet. I am offering four classes:

Microsoft Office Applications 1, MWF 8:00 am – 9:30 am Eastern Daylight Time beginning June 15 and ending August 28

Computer Programming 1 (Visual Basic), MWF 9:45 am – 11:15 am Eastern Daylight Time beginning June 15 and ending August 28

These classes would satisfy a computer elective requirement. The MS Office class is extremely practical and covers skills that students will use in other high school and college classes.

I am offering two other courses; however, they have prerequisites.

I begin each of my classes with prayer requests, and then ask if one of the students would like to lead the prayer. Sometimes I get volunteers, and sometimes I am the one leading the prayer.

I humbly request that you click the link to my web site below and determine if this is something you might be interested in.

Fernbrook Farms

Homeschool Spring Semester 2009

Class Dates and Topics:

Garden Planting                                                                                                         May 5, 7

On this day we’ll plan out our Homeschool garden and begin planting.  We’ll transplant our seedlings from the green house and sow some more seeds directly in the ground.  We’ll discuss companion planting and traditional methods of vegetable gardening.  We’ll also look at compost and soil composition and determine what we need to do in order to maintain healthy, nutrient rich soil.

Goats and Sheep                                                                                                         May 12, 14

Spring is the season for babies on the farm!  During this class we’ll learn about the hard-work and care that goes into raising goats, sheep and their offspring on the farm.  This class will have us in the animal barn learning what our ruminants eat and what they need to  lead healthy and productive lives to provide us with food and fiber we need in our daily lives.

Sows and Piglets: Field trip to the Hellis Stock Farm                   May 19, 21

We’re taking a trip to the largest contiguous farm in New Jersey where we’ll be given a tour of their animal pastures and sow barn.  We’ll see how farmers work to provide safe, healthy environments for sows and their piglets as well as learn about their steer production.  This farm is rich in history and is an exciting place to explore.

Bee Friendly: Pollinating Populations                                                      May 26, 28

Honey Bees are great for farms.  Not only do we get to collect their honey, but they also promote pollination.  Bees have an amazing sense of community.  Although we’ll stay far enough away from the bees to keep from being stung, we’ll take a close look at how bees communicate and work together.  We’ll also look at the anatomy of honeybees and their process of producing honey.  It’ll be a buzzing good time.

Good Bugs and Bad Bugs                                                                                      June 2, 4

Aphids are good to find in your garden.  Do you know what an Aphid is and why it might be farmer friendly?  Cabbage Whites aren’t so friendly to your garden.  This lesson will be spent in various gardens looking at pest management in small gardens and in the fields where Farmer Q cultivates trees and shrubs.  We’ll learn to identify some of these bugs and learn how to encourage them to stay and how to keep others away.

Solar Ovens: Baking with the Sun’s Energy!                                          June 9, 11

Solar ovens are easy to build and fun to use!  Anyone can make one, anyone can use one.  We’ll learn to construct our solar oven, looking at the principles that make it work, so that you can build one at home.  We’ll also try a hand at cooking a few different types of dishes with some ingredients from our gardens.

Free Vision Therapy Workshop

Vision and Learning: What's the Connection?

Is your child struggling with reading or schoolwork?

Do they complain of headaches?

Are they easily distracted and unfocused?

Using our vision for learning goes well beyond seeing 20/20. Children use a myriad of visual and visual processing skills to be effective readers and learners, but most eye exams do not test for these issues. Dr. Gallaway will discuss how visual disorders affect reading and learning, the signs of visual problems that parents can look for, and how these issues can be treated.

Dr. Michael Gallaway is an optometrist who has been in private practice specializing in children's vision and vision therapy since 1989. He is also a professor and researcher at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia.

Time:       7:30 p.m.
