ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter
May 2010
From the President’s Desk

Dear Friends,
By the time you read this ENOCH’s convention will be less than two
weeks away. The Board is working on the final
preparations. We have a great lineup of keynote speakers:
Steve and Teri Maxwell and Rebecca Powell. We have added a
special track with David Hazell for parents of preschoolers and Julie
Hiramine for our first teen track, as well as a great lineup of
workshop speakers. Of course there will be many vendors to
check out and to buy curriculum from. There will be books,
manipulatives and lots of fun things to help you and your kids with
homeschooling.
If you missed pre-registration online, you can still register at the
convention at the door. Any teen interested in attending the teen track
on Saturday can still do so. Be sure to let those in registration know.
When you come to the convention make sure that you stop by at the ENOCH
Booth and say hello. We would love to meet you. We will be around the
convention hall as well as at the ENOCH booth. We are looking forward
to seeing everyone at the convention.
See you there,
Rich Millward

Encouraging Words From Homeschoolers Across the Nation
Helping Families when
Emergencies Arise
Home School Foundation

Homeschool families facing emergencies do not have to face those
situations alone. Whether a family is facing a medical emergency, house
fire, natural disaster, or sudden loss of a job, the Home School
Foundation stands ready to help them continue their journey of
homeschooling.
Through their
Compassion Emergency Response Fund
the Foundation has
helped rebuild many a home-schoolroom after hurricanes, fires, or
floods. They have also stepped in during medical emergencies that would
otherwise cripple a family’s homeschool.
One such family HSF helped recently were long-time homeschoolers who’s
schooling hit roadblocks when the mother unexpectedly faced a
life-threatening illness that kept her in the ICU for two weeks and
then in recovery for months afterward.
“The ripple effect of change that my illness caused definitely impacted
our already strained finances,” the mother wrote the Foundation. “My
husband, who is the sole provider for our family of six, ended up
taking leave for two months to be with the family during my recovery.
During that time his pay, which fluctuates already due to the nature of
his job, was reduced.”
This experience put the family in a very strained financial situation.
Due to the mother’s ongoing health issues over the course of the next
year, they faced the real possibility of having to put their children
in a public school—they simply could not afford school resources.
But thankfully they contacted the Home School Foundation and were able
to qualify for a grant that helped keep their family and homeschool
intact. “[You helped] relieve the anxiety that we were facing
concerning this school year,” the mother wrote.
If you are a homeschool family in need, please visit the
Get Help section of our
website to find the many ways we offer assistance. If you do not see
your particular need addressed there, feel free to
contact HSF with a brief
explanation of your need to find out if there is something we can do.
You can also find information on how to donate under our
Give Help section.

ENOCH EVENTS
ENOCH of New Jersey
presents the 20th Annual Homeschool
Convention
ENOCH Convention – Read All About It!
Everything you could want to know about the upcoming Convention on May
14-15 is now available! If you are on ENOCH’s mailing list,
you should have received a brochure in the mail by now.
Besides general info, you can read descriptions of all the workshops
being offered. Take the time to read through it prayerfully
to see if God might want to speak to you through some of these
workshops.
You can also read about our Children’s Program and/or our Teen
Program. We’re excited to be able to offer something for
everyone this year!
If you did not receive a brochure, you have two options.
1.You can go to
ENOCH's Website and find all the
same information.
2. You can go to
ENOCH's Website and download a
brochure.
See you in May!
DON'T LEAVE YOUR KIDS
BEHIND!
There’s no reason to leave your kids at home while you’re at the ENOCH
Convention. Why pay a babysitter when you can have your
children participate in our Children’s Program. Select from
among the 5 two hour sessions, or participate in all 5 for a fun-filled
weekend!
Walk-in registration is available. Just $12 per child per
session. Discounts are available for multiple siblings.
If you’re still not convinced, just read the descriptions below:
Friday 3:15-5:00pm
Fire and Ice
This program explores "magical" chemical potions, the wonders of Dry
ice and the dynamics of air pressure (with a little help from Eggbert
the egg). Children will investigate the three
states of matter in fun and novel ways, take a carbon taste test and
witness a spectacular and mysterious bubbling potion. This event will
excite every child's scientific curiosity
Friday 6:15-8:15pm
Crusader Knight
Children will learn about the arms and armor of the crusading knight as
well as a general background about the crusades. Hands-on activities
will be included.
Saturday 8:45-10:45am
Up, Up and Away
This session explores pressure in different ways. Talk about being
under pressure; would you rather be stepped on by a hundred pound
person or a 1,000 pound elephant? We will have a volunteer from the
audience come up and work with the instructor to help give you the
answer. Air is all around but what would Bernoulli say if it’s heated?
See what it must be like for a balloonist to soar like the birds. With
some common household items we will create our version of a hot air
balloon. These and more will be provided to thrill and entertain your
children. This high energy demonstration is fun, spectacular and sure
to leave the children with memories that will last well beyond our
grand finale!
How to Get the Most Out of the Convention
What’s the Most
Important Thing to Do Before the Convention?
By
Sue August
By the time you read this article, the Convention will be almost upon
us. Pre-registration will have been closed, but you can still
register at the door! You can still go to our website to look
over the workshop topics or view the list of participating
exhibitors. You can read over the details for the Teen
Program and the Children’s Program. Hopefully, after doing
this homework, you’ll decide to join us on May 14 and 15.
To some of you faithful readers, the following article may sound
familiar. It has been published in the ENOCH e-newsletter for
the last 2 years. I can’t think of anything more important
than the thoughts below.
I am confident that God has great things in store for me and for all
those who attend the convention this year. Here’s how I will
spend this last month in preparation. I will be praying –
praying specifically for every aspect of the convention.
I will pray for the Keynote and Workshop Speakers. They have
full and busy lives. The convention season across America can
be particularly taxing on them. I will pray for God’s
strength to be present when they are weak. I will especially
be praying that they will take time to hear from God regarding what He
wants them to say to the Homeschool community. I will attend
the keynote sessions and workshops with an expectation of hearing a
message filled with God’s leading for my upcoming homeschool year.
I will pray for the Exhibitors. With money tight, many of the
smaller exhibitors are unsure if they will break even this
year. It is not easy nor is it inexpensive, traveling across
the country with literally tons of books in tow! I will pray
for God’s mercy for them as they travel. We have about 30 new
Exhibitors this year. I will pray that their first experience
with NJ Homeschoolers will be a rewarding one! I will also
pray that the Exhibitors will be given an extra measure of wisdom and
discernment when giving counsel to homeschoolers with questions.
I will pray for the children who have registered for the Children’s
Program, that a new love for history will be birthed in them as they
learn from the folks at Historical Happenings who have a real passion
for glorifying God through history.
I will pray for the Teens in the Culture Shock program, that their
passion to serve God will be increased and that they will be set on a
course to glorify God for the rest of their lives.
I will pray for all the volunteers, from those who have sacrificed the
entire convention weekend to those who will be serving ENOCH for just a
few hours.
Mostly, I will be praying for you – NJ Homeschoolers! My
prayer is that your calendar will be cleared and will stay clear for
May 14-15. I’ll be praying that God will meet you in a very
real way at the ENOCH Convention. Whether you simply need
help choosing curriculum or possibly God wants you to do an entire
overhaul of your homeschool, my prayer is that you will know that God
has called you to homeschool and that He will not ask you to do
anything without providing the grace and means to do it.
Looking forward to seeing you at the convention! Please stop
by the ENOCH booth to say hello!
From our Keynote Speakers
It’s Time to Step Up
Your Game: Transitioning Your Child to
Middle School
Rebecca Ingram Powell
Rebecca Ingram Powell is a pastor’s wife, mother of three, conference
speaker, and the author of Season of Change: Parenting Your Middle
Schooler with Passion and Purpose and three Bible studies for teens:
Wise Up!, Get Real!, and Dig Deep. Connect online at
www.MomSeriously.com
If your child is entering middle school this year, your parenting
skills may need a tune-up for the many miles ahead. Focus on
appreciating this season, listening well, and getting to know the many
friends that will be a part of your child’s life.
Appreciate the season.
Your child is growing on three fronts: physically, emotionally, and
socially. Your parenting style needs to adapt in order to accommodate
those changes. Can you keep up?
- Physically.
Middlers are excited about the physical transformations they are
experiencing, yet these can be embarrassing, as well. This is a season
of comparison as they measure their outward appearance and body
development from the yardstick of their peers and our beauty-driven
culture.
- Emotionally.
On their way to becoming adults, middlers long for independence yet
still appreciate parent-imposed boundaries. Some kids seem to race
toward the status that accompanies growing up. Others may lag behind,
content with the last remnants of childhood.
- Socially.
As they develop deeper friendships, middlers may put some distance
between themselves and their parents. Staying connected might not be as
easy as it used to be, so determine to do your part.
Listening well.
It seems we moms only get busier as our children grow, so we must train
ourselves to become even more intentional about listening.
- Listen
without talking. Middlers are sometimes slow to pull their
thoughts together. After all, they are developing mentally, as well!
Your child needs a patient listener who does not interrupt or try to
rush him through a conversation.
- Listen
without fixing it. Often your twelve-year-old just wants
to talk through a decision she is making. She does not want you to make
it for her. Determine if your child is asking for advice or if she is
simply turning to you as a sounding board.
- Listen
without distractions. Take advantage of drives to sports
practice and music lessons by showing your interest in listening to
your child. Put the cell phone on silent and turn the radio down. Visit
quiet places for occasional dates with your child. They long for that
personal time with you.
Get to know their friends.
Friends are the lifeblood of adolescence. Even our homeschooled
children begin to turn to their peer relationships for advice,
encouragement, and as a way of identifying themselves. Get to know your
children’s friends and you will get to know your changing child.
- An Open Home.
Who cares if your home is clean or cluttered? Growing kids just need a
full fridge! They also need to feel welcomed and loved. An open home is
one of the best avenues for sharing Christ’s love.
- Networking.
Are you involved in a homeschool support group? Do you have a group of
like-minded moms who are journeying with you through these years? Get
to know other parents. Collect phone numbers and emails, and connect
with your child’s friends’ families. This is a season for you to
concentrate on building relationships, too. Ask God to show you
opportunities to pray for these families and ways to minister to them.
- Go Where the
Kids Go. Learn your way around Facebook and set up your
own account. This is a great way to keep tabs on your kids and their
friends. Also, do not hesitate to ask questions of your middler. Who’s number keeps showing up on
the caller ID? Who keeps texting you? Indeed, it is your
business, and your child will be secretly pleased to have a mom who
stays involved.
Upon entering middle school, acknowledge that your child has entered a
new phase of life. Celebrate the beginning of school this fall with a
special dinner, a weekend trip, or a keepsake gift. This will serve as
a benchmark for you, too, reminding you that your child is growing up.
Offer new freedoms along with new responsibilities. Enjoy this season
of change with your middle schooler!
David Hazell of My
Father’s World
David Hazell of My Father’s World is one of the Featured Speakers at
the upcoming ENOCH Convention on May 14 and 15. While he is
in the area, he would love to speak at a church on Sunday, May
16.
If your church would be interested in hearing incredible life changing
stories about what happens when God’s Word is translated into a new
language. Here is one of the main reasons My Father’s World
exists. When David and Marie Hazell returned to the United
States after 8 years of doing Bible translation work in Russia,
including 4 years in Siberia, their hearts were heavy regarding the
status of Bible translation worldwide.
In fact, of the 6912 languages, only 438 have a complete
Bible. And there are many translation projects that are
simply lacking minimal funds in order to move to
fruition. This is one of the reasons My Father’s
World was founded. A significant portion of the company’s
profits are donated to Bible translation. There are many
testimonies of how families were changed forever by simply having
scriptures available in a native language. God’s word truly
is living and active.
David now seeks avenues to share this information with others, through
his passionate ability to tell incredible stories while presenting
Scripture to his audience. In addition to speaking at
homeschool conventions, David often stays in a community one additional
day where he speaks at a Sunday morning worship service.

World at

What
Category 1: Form: Ballad
Theme: Humility
Category 2: Form: Blank Verse Dramatic
Monologue Theme: Mercy
Category 3: Form: Heroic
Couplet Theme: Justice
We try to choose themes that will leave a lot of room for students’
imagination and interpretation, without us dictating the response. We
want students to come up with their own ideas of what best portrays the
given quote, without us dictating the response.
Students do not have to actually include the theme word in their poem.
The words are meant to be the inspiration and theme behind whatever
images or story the students decide to portray.
We hope that students will come up with many imaginative ideas to fit
the theme. Our judges love it when a student comes up with something
they had not thought of before.
