ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

September 2009

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Friends,

I just returned from spending a week as a counselor at a Christian camp up in the Adirondack Mountains. The boys learned of the Savior and His love for them while they were there. Many did not want to leave the last Friday morning. One 9-year boy cried Thursday evening because he did not want to go home.  He came from a sad home situation in New York City.

While I was there, I lived with six 12-year-olds. In working and taking care of them, I was reminded of why my wife and I homeschool our girls.  One of my boys made a comment to a friend of his that he studied 3 to 4 hours a day during the summer so that he could get into a good college some day. And he’s only 12-years old! It’s not just about educating our children, but the importance of spiritual training.

Let us remember that we are preparing our children to love and serve the Lord with all -their heart, with all their soul, and with all their mind. It’s not just an education of book learning but of their spiritual training as well. As you begin this new school year, let this be your goal and motive.

In His Service,
Rich Millward
President

Encouraging Words

WHY HOMESCHOOL ANOTHER YEAR?

Author: Cam Leedahl
Cam Pic

I had the most interesting phone call the other day. A mom called and challenged me to give her three reasons why she should keep on homeschooling her children. Now, I know this gal, and was quite surprised at her request! I asked her why she would consider not continuing with home education. She said she’d give me the reason after she heard my answers. This is something of what I told her:

1. Most importantly, there is no better way to help your children to become mature disciples of Christ than to have them with you. When you are with them in the daily events of housework, yard work, school studies, sibling relationships, Bible studies, neighborhood issues, and cultural challenges, you have the best opportunity to train and instruct them in the Lord. It is our relationship with Jesus Christ that is of most value. Being in the peer environment of a traditional classroom will greatly restrict those opportunities and, in many cases, will neutralize all that you hope to accomplish.

2. They can have the best social experience at home. Spending most of their time in the company of peers is not beneficial to any child. Do you want them to model their behavior and attitudes after other children, or after adults? You can structure how much time they will spend in peer environment. You control who will be influencing them and how much time they will spend with those persons. The conventional classroom is a subculture that is not “real life”. The best social experiences that will prepare your children for “real life” IS real life – the life of family, church, and community.

3. They have the opportunity for the best academic experience at home. Individualized instruction is premier in education. You are not tied to one curriculum or one teaching approach. There are many sources a parent can turn to for students struggling in a certain subject as well as for the student who is extremely bright. Many parents worry, especially in the high school years, that they cannot provide adequate academic challenges for their children. However, the child that learns how to think, how to find information he does not have, and where to find that information, has learned three of the most important academic skills. Couple those with good, strong character, and any shortfalls can be easily overcome later. Most importantly, a belief system cannot be separated from academics. Secular textbooks are written from a humanistic viewpoint, based on evolution, self-absorption and the absence of Biblical Truth. One cannot hope to overcome that negative influence by throwing in devotions and Scripture reading.
What belief system do you want them to learn?
“Okay, Cam, this is why I asked you the question. I woke up this morning thinking, I am tired. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to plod through another chapter in math. I don’t want to deal with my child’s whiny voice. I don’t want to hear my mom ask me for the hundredth time how do I know what I do for my kids will be enough.

“But do you know what I hear you saying? Homeschooling is not about me. It’s about the children and my responsibility to them. And it’s about God. Do you know what? I am not really going to quit homeschooling, I was just being selfish and wallowing in self-pity for a while. But what I am going to do is put away the books today. I think we will make muffins and bring them around to some neighbors. Get our minds off of ourselves. And do you know what? I think homeschooling is also about my own spiritual maturity. Ouch. It hurts to grow up. Bye, and thanks!”

I hung up the phone with a smile. As beneficial as homeschooling was for our children, now adults, it has been just as beneficial to my husband and me. Not only did we relearn history and science as it should have been taught to us, but in our efforts to bring up our children in the training and instruction of the Lord, He trained and instructed us.

May the Lord bless your efforts as you seek His wisdom in your parenting.

OTHER EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Skating

Skates
Cherry Hill Skating Center at 664 Deer Road in Cherry Hill has been secured for the 2009 - 2010 school year.  Skating is from 1 – 3 PM.

The dates are as follows: September 18, 2009; October,16, 2009; November 20, 2009; January 15, 2010; February 19, 2010; March 19, 2010 ; April 16, 2010

Skate Rentals are 3.00 for in line or quads.  Admission is $3 per skater with a cap of 12.00 per family.  We have offered several free admission skates, and a reduced price skate in the past.  If we continue to get such a great turnout that will continue.  Amazingly our price from the rink has not increased in several years.

Please do not bring outside food in as the refreshment stand is open.  We get to control the music being played and as a favor to us all games is off (a source of revenue for the rink) so please are kind enough to consume all food before coming into the rink.  An exception would be cake for a birthday celebration.

Competitive Sports for Homeschooled High Schoolers

sportsBy Sue August

Sadly, many homeschoolers have put their children in school when they reach high school age.  Each family has its own reasons, but one of the reasons I hear most often is that they didn’t want their children to miss out on team sports.

Fortunately, a homeschooling dad in South Jersey took some initiative to solve this dilemma.  He formed Tri-County Homeschool Sports Association (TCHSA).  This is a competitive sports league for high school aged homeschoolers in New Jersey.  This year, the league is offering 2 sports: Winter Basketball and Spring Baseball/Softball.  There are separate teams for boys and girls.  There is also some possibility of Fall Soccer or Cross Country if there is enough interest shown right away.

The TCHSA home fields are located in East Greenwich in Gloucester County.  It is easily accessible to Rt. 295.  Team members from the past have been from many surrounding counties, including Camden County, Burlington County and even Mercer County.  TCHSA teams play their games against Christian and other private high schools.  Registration fees are approximately $100 per child.  For more information email tchsafalcons@yahoo.com

Here’s what one mom has to say about TCHSA:

I have homeschooled my son for the past 13 years, along with his brother and sister.   I was blessed to see him graduate with our local homeschool group, GCCHSA this past June.  I'm writing to appeal to those of you who may be considering getting involved with the TCHSA group this year.  I know everyone has a different reason for getting their children involved with sports, but I thought I would share just a few (and there are many) of the advantages that TCHSA has given my son.  First of all, my son had no prior basketball experience when he joined the basketball team in the beginning years of TCHSA.  We played many good teams, but we also played not so good teams.  Our TCHSA team faced a few "giants" over the years, but that only inspired us to work even harder.  There were times my son just wanted to plain, give up.  The team work that I began to see in my son was inspiring.  You can't be involved with sports without teamwork - that is for sure.  He also learned endurance in the face of adversity.  We certainly didn't win every game.  I also began to see sports in a different light.  Being a musician by trade, I was never really involved in organized sports.  I share all of this to try to persuade you to really think about having your homeschooled child or children involved in TCHSA sports.  Even if they have not participated in the past, now is a good time to start.  The future of this program is up to you. Please consider contacting TCHSA for more info.

Blessings,
Cathy Miles

Attention Burlington County Homeschoolers

boy scouts
Nick Nowak, a 12-year homeschool alum and a professional with the Burlington County Boy Scouts is offering the opportunity for homeschooling families to get involved in their own scouting units.
As a past scout in Cub Scout Pack 333 which was comprised of homeschool families, he found several benefits for homeschoolers involved in scouting:
•    Scouting is a family-based and character-building program that reinforces the Christian values taught in most homeschooling homes.
•    Scouting’s program and advancement activities fit very well with home education.  Space Exploration and Nature Merit Badges supplement science and Citizenship requirements supplement Social Civics, and so on.
•    Scouting offers a very flexible program which is supervised by the parents, yet teaches youth through leadership positions.
•    Scouting is a well-recognized extracurricular activity that can make a good addition on scholarship and college applications.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with scouting, there are three main programs.  Each is structured to meet the needs of the target age group, so they can develop into the moral, responsible citizens that are needed in our country.

Cub Scouting (Pack): For boys in first grade or age 7 to age 11
Boy Scouting (Troop): For boys in sixth grade or age 11 to age 17
Venturing (Crew): For young men and women in 9th grade and ages 14-20

Please consider this opportunity and the benefits it could bring to your family.  If you have any questions about scouting, or if you or your sons or daughters are interested in helping start a homeschool scouting troop, pack or crew please contact Nick at (609) 784-2069 or at nnowak@bsamail.org.

KEYBOARD CLASSROOM

keyboard
I have been working with various HomeSchool parents and HomeSchool consultants and they have suggested that I contact HomeSchool Organizations to introduce them to Keyboard Classroom.  Our basic tool skills typing program has had much success with independent home educators.

We found that you wouldn't offer a child a book without teaching them to read.  Well, why would you offer them computer programs without teaching them how to type correctly? It's a lifetime skill!

We have been to HomeSchool Conventions where we hear, "My child has used various typing programs and they still can't type. How is yours different?"  The quick answer is ours is a back to basics approach.  Children must master proper hand position and it all starts with the home keys (A,S,D,F,J,K,L,wink. Once a child shows proficiency there based on a timed exercise measuring correct keystrokes and minimal errors, we add additional letters and stretches. Also, our unique Finger Guides attach to most standard keyboards by Velcro and assure that fingers stay where they're supposed to be.  We use games as a reward for passing levels of fluency, not as a teaching tool.

Please check out our website at www.keyboardclassroom.com. If you are interested in a demo copy I will be happy to send you one. Also, we would appreciate it if you can include Keyboard Classroom information in your newsletter.
For more information please contact Carrie at carrie@keyboardclassrom.com.
