August 2015 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

In 1967, a court case would mark the beginning of homeschool rights in New Jersey. That case was State v. Massa. This year marks 48 years since the ruling was given and with it the doors were opened for families to freely home educate their children. I know some pioneer families who went through the difficulties of staying true to homeschooling in the early years when Boards of Education and Welfare were trying to bully their way into their lives. HSLDA has been there to help these families and continue to do so.

Now, you're asking, "Where are you going with this? We know this." Here is why. Recently, I was thinking of how the face of homeschooling has changed, not only in New Jersey but all over. In the early years, it was for religious freedom but today, families homeschool because they fear the school system, bullying, drugs, government oversight, shootings, gangs, etc. The list can go on and on. I don't know all of you who read this newsletter and over the years, I have gotten to know some of you at the annual homeschool convention or other gatherings. Everyone has their reasons.

Within the homeschool community, things have changed as well. When our family began the journey, there were lots of support groups for the parents. I was saddened when our local one closed after being together for many years. We had wonderful times together. Many of the friends I have today were born from those times. While time has gone on, we have morphed into coops, internet group chats, Facebook groups, park get-together, activities for the kids, and so on. In New Jersey, homeschoolers have become more independent. They don't need the fellowship time with other homeschoolers. "I can handle this on my own." May I remind us all that we are not an island? Even the Bible says, "Do not forsake the assembling of one another."

I want to call you to rethink your school year's plans that lay ahead in less than a month. Educate your children, by all means. Let them have the activities they want to enjoy with their friends. But for the sake of your own spiritual and mental state, find some homeschool friends, of like mind, that you can spend quality time with. Take time for yourself once a month, like we did all those years ago. Get refreshed. I cannot tell you what those monthly meetings did for my wife. She loved bouncing ideas, laughing with friends, discussing her homeschool day with other moms who were going through the same thing. You are not alone! Get connected! I pray this year will be full of times for you as well as for your children.

Enjoy your homeschool year from all of us at ENOCH!

Rich Millward

We have inquired for the needs of ENOCH over the last few months and no one has been able to step up to the plate. Our family cannot endure the work that ENOCH requires when it consumes so much of our time because there are not enough people to serve. (Rich Millward) We need your help! If you have a heart to serve and can help us, we would love to have you. Here are some areas we have open.

Newsletter person- computer experience especially with HTML programming. We are in need a newsletter person ASAP. Please, if you have the experience and can volunteer your time, we would greatly appreciate it.

Silent Auction Coordinator - this job runs from December through the convention. You must be able to contact perspective donors during business hours. Some computer knowledge a plus. Computer experience, time, and a desire to serve homeschoolers of New Jersey would aid us tremendously. We are calling on this younger generation to come up and stand with us. Please contact our Office with your contact information and we will get back to you. Email: (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) .

Convention Needs - again there are vacancies - too many to number - to help on the convention. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact David West about where you can serve at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
