"Another year is dawning,” is a hymn we sing during our Watch Night Service, New Year's Eve, at church. This was originally written as a poem by the author, Frances Ridley Havergal, to friends in January 1874 as a New Year's greeting. It is a now a beautiful hymn of consecration for the New Year. It is part of the first line – "Another Year is dawning; dear Father, let it be..." – that was the thought for this month’s article.
Another year is dawning at midnight - whether you are in church or watching the ball drop in Times Square or asleep - another year will begin. What will it hold? Great joy? Encouragement? Trials? Disappointments? What about those “aha” moments when your teen finally gets the algebra concept? Maybe your third grader finds the joys of reading. Maybe it is a few tears shed as your last child finishes homeschooling. Or it is a sickness or the death of a loved one? Who knows? Whatever it brings, we know Him who holds tomorrow. "Dear Father, let it be...” as the song goes, another year of working, waiting, progress, praise, mercies, faithfulness, leaning on Him, service. As we go through 2014, let us look to the Father above, for His grace and mercy when we fail, His encouragement when we struggle and His love toward us all the time. As this New Year begins, let us encourage one another, pray for one another and not just at the beginning, but the whole year through. The Board of ENOCH greatly appreciates your prayers this coming and your words of encouragement. It helps us to get through those difficult times.
Here is a suggestion - why not have one of your children write a paper on Frances Ridley Havergal? She wrote hundreds of poems and hymns, she was an accomplished pianist and vocalist, proficient in seven languages, and possessed a keen mind (memorized the entire New Testament, Psalms, Isaiah, and the Minor Prophets). You may be surprised by what they learn.
Some announcements for 2014 - we are pleased to announce another one of our main speakers for the 2014convention - Diane Kummer, from HSLDA. Diane is one of HSLDA's High School Consultants and will be speaking on a variety of topics dealing with homeschooling during those high school years. ENOCH is contacted throughout the year on questions about homeschooling through high school. Many parents are not sure what to do, how to have proper recordkeeping, even a transcript can be an issue. Diane is a wealth of information and encouragement when you think - "Can I homeschool all the way through high school?" The answer is “Yes, you can!” Come to the convention and hear Diane share her own experience as she homeschooled her two children through high school.
Andrew Pudewa, from the Institute of Excellence in Writing (IEW), is one of our other main speakers. JandY Ministry will again be doing the Children's Program at this year's convention. Sign-up early as their sessions filled up quickly and last year we had to turn people away. Speaking of sign-in up early - Early Bird Registration for ENOCH's 2014 Convention opens February 1st!
Happy New Year!
Looking forward to a great year,
President - ENOCH of NJ
