ENOCH of NEW JERSEY e-NEWSLETTER

March 2009

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN

Dear Friends

This will be Bob Reith’s last issue as Editor for our monthly e-newsletter. Bob and his wife, Margie, have served ENOCH for many years. Margie became our Office Manager and handled all the phone calls and e-mails directed at the office.   With the reduction of ENOCH job responsibilities and a change in her job outside the home, Margie stepped down as Office Manager.  Bob continued handling phone calls and e-mails and also became our Newsletter Editor.  In recent years, he worked on our convention programs and brochures.

As we go to press, the ENOCH Board wishes to thank and recognize the Reiths for all their faithful years of service to the homeschoolers of New Jersey.  God bless them.

A final call this month:

More reminders for you:

Thank you and God bless you.

Richard Millward

President

19th Annual ENOCH of New Jersey Homeschool Convention

This year’s convention will be held Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, 2009 at the Raritan Center in Edison.  This is NOT Memorial Day weekend.  Make your plans now to attend.  The most current information regarding the convention can be found on our website at http://www.enochnj.org.

With This Economy, Who Can Afford to Go to a Convention?  You Can!

Convention Coordinator Sue August offers a countdown “top 10” list

The last few months have had us all reviewing our budgets and looking for ways cut back and be better stewards of our money.  You might be tempted to think you can’t afford to go to the ENOCH Convention this year.  You might think you need that money to pay some other expenses.

Below is a countdown of the top 10 ways you CAN afford to come to the ENOCH Convention, May 29 and 30.

10.  First Timer Rebate - If you have never been to the convention, this is the year to give it a try.  Every first-time family can collect a $20 cash rebate at the ENOCH booth during the convention!  This translates into as little as $18 for you and your spouse to spend the weekend with ENOCH!

9. Referral Program - So you’re not a first timer; but surely you know someone who is!  Have them mention your name when they register and you can receive an ENOCH Buck ($3 value) for each family you refer.  If you get busy now, you could easily earn back the cost of admission to the convention!

8.  Early Bird Deadline - If you don’t procrastinate, you can save about 30% off the regular admission price.  A married couple can attend the convention for only $38!

7. Used Curriculum Sale - How about dusting off some of that old curriculum you’re finished with?  Just price your books, drop them off when you first enter the convention center and then receive your check in the mail.  You can easily earn back way more than the price of your admission to the convention!

6. Used Curriculum Sale Bargains - Most items at the Used Curriculum Sale are priced at garage sale prices.  The money you save on these bargains will more than make up for what you spend on your admission to the convention!

5. Volunteer - If you volunteer for just 3 hours, you can shop at the Used Curriculum Sale on Friday night.  You and your fellow volunteers will get dibs on the best bargains!  The sale that is open to the general public is not until Saturday.

4.  Exhibit Hall - You can save money by taking advantage of the convention specials that most exhibitors offer.  An even subtler money-saver is that you will be less likely to buy something unsuitable from the convention than you would from the internet.  At the convention, you can see what you’re buying, compare it to other products and ask exhibitors as many questions as you like!

3. Exhibitor Coupons - When you arrive at the convention, you will be handed a Convention Program.  Turn to the section with the Exhibitor Coupons.  Using these coupons, you can receive free items, discounted items, etc.

2. Workshop Recordings - When you arrive at the convention, you will be handed an envelope containing your name tags.  In that same envelope, you will find a Buy 2 CDs-Get 1 Free.  Spend this on yourself, or get an inexpensive gift for a friend who was not fortunate enough to be able to attend the convention.

1.  Finally and most importantly - for the price of admission, you will gain access to speakers and exhibitors that have invested their hearts and lives in the work of equipping the saints for homeschooling.  Taking advantage of what the ENOCH Convention has to offer in terms of equipping you for the upcoming school year and for the long haul, is something you just can’t put a price on!

See you at the convention – no doubt about it!

Convention Appetizer: Teaching Your Right Brain Child by Diane Craft

Dianne Craft is one of the Featured Speakers at ENOCH’s upcoming convention:

TEACHING YOUR RIGHT BRAIN CHILD

Dianne Craft, MA, CNHP

God has a wonderful sense of humor, I believe.  He wants us to grow and stretch, and one of the ways He does this is to give us children who are very different from each other.  Just as it is very likely that a right brain person will have a left brain spouse, so it is that if our first born is left brain dominant, the next child likely will be right brain dominant.  This brain dominance affects both personality characteristics, and learning styles.

How do you determine if you are teaching a right brain child?  Children tend to display these characteristics at an early age.  All children are creative, but your right brain child will seem to be even more imaginative.  The right brain learns things in "wholes" rather than parts, so that child will get math concepts well, but  may struggle with the "details" like the math facts, or checking work.   In thinking styles, the right brainer often goes by "gut feel" whereas the left brainer prefers multiple facts before coming to a conclusion.  In test taking, the left brainer prefers the black and white choices presented in multiple choice questions, while the right brainer may prefer essay questions, where the
