April 2013 Newsletter

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

APRIL 2013

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

There is a woman at work who I have been talking to about homeschooling, (her son is three) and she is so excited about going to the convention!  The other day she asked me which speakers she should go listen to.  I told her that I would go over the workshops with her.  That is what the convention is all about, a potential homeschooler getting excited about looking at curriculum, listening to speakers, and meeting other homeschoolers.  That is why it is so important for you veteran homeschoolers to come: to encourage those new homeschoolers. But, sadly, that could end this year.

Yes, it is true; we are looking at having to cancel next year's convention.  We already have some great speakers lined up, but that may not make a difference.  Financially, ENOCH is struggling. We are trying to get other sources of income up and running, but more importantly if our attendance numbers do not improve this year, the vendors will not come back.  Vendors have to make a choice about which conventions they can go to.  This year we had several vendors say that they could not come to our convention because there are three big conventions the same weekend as ENOCH’s.  Since ENOCH’s Convention is considered small they go other places.  We have looked at possibly moving the convention to a different weekend, but that has not been possible.   I heard from someone that people are thinking about registering for the convention but not coming to the convention, just so ENOCH can get the income, that is a nice gesture, but without people actually attending the convention it only solves part of the problem.  If we don't have actual people show up and look at curriculum, fill up the sessions, buy from the exhibitors, the vendors have no choice but to not come back.
If the ENOCH Convention is gone, there will be no local convention for you to attend; you will have to drive to Pennsylvania, upstate New York, or Massachusetts.  As great as those conventions are, and we are friends with all of those state homeschooling boards, they do not know the New Jersey regulations for homeschooling; they cannot point you to a local support group; you will not see those friends you only meet at the convention each year.  And without the convention, ENOCH cannot survive financially and we will not be there for you to help find that local support group, help that new homeschooler with what they need to do to begin homeschooling, and you will lose a voice in Trenton when homeschool legislation bills are introduced.

To encourage you to come to the convention we have extended the Early-Bird Registration until April 20th, so whether you register on-line or by mail you have until April 20th before the prices go up.  Click here to register.

I think this will be the 16th or 17th convention my wife and I have attended and I still get excited about coming, even though I work the whole time now.  I enjoy listening to the speakers, talking with the vendors, whom many I have become friends with over the years, and speaking with homeschoolers from throughout NJ and from neighboring states.  It was at an ENOCH Convention back in 1997 that after hearing Ken Ham speak on Friday evening we decided there was no other option, but to homeschool our daughter.  Please give future homeschooling parents of New Jersey that same opportunity that you have enjoyed over the years!

I ask that you pray about coming to the convention.  I know some of you are saying, but I have all the curriculum I need, maybe there will be something at the convention that you will see that would help your son or daughter.  Sit on a few of the workshop and get encouraged, encourage a discouraged homeschool mom.  Volunteer, we need many volunteers for the convention to run smoothly.  Also, pray for the convention staff, those who volunteer for the whole two days so that you can be blessed.  And pray for the ENOCH Board as we need to make some decisions in the near future concerning the organization.

Here are some of the things that I mentioned earlier that ENOCH is doing to help increase our income:

First, Processing with a Purpose - If you own a business or know someone who owns a business and accepts credit cards you can help support ENOCH.  Simply process your credit cards under this program and Cornerstone Payment Systems will make a donation to ENOCH for as long as you participate.  For more information click on the following link http://cornerstone.cc/enochofnj/

Second, Box Tops for Education - Collect them yourself, ask your non-homeschooling friends, church members, etc. to save them for you to benefit ENOCH.   If you are already saving them for your support group please continue to support them. We will have a container at the convention for you to drop off your box tops or you can send them to our P.O. Box - ENOCH of NJ, P.O. Box 308, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716-0308.

Third, Silent Auction - This year at the convention we will be holding a Silent Auction.  Some of the organizations that have donated items for you to bid on so far are BJU, IEW, Apologia Press and, Sight and Sound Theater.  Check out all the items that you will be able to bid on at the convention website.
Thank you all for your payers for ENOCH and those that serve the organization.

In His Service,
Rich Millward

Silent Auction

March 2013 Newsletter

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

MARCH 2013

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

ENOCH has been quite busy during the past month. Not only in planning the convention details and filling gaps of staff coordinators but in other areas that can help ENOCH and you. So let me begin with some of the things we have accomplished.

  1. We are excited to announce that we will be holding a Silent Auction during the convention. We will be having items on display that you can see and bid on. We hope to have a list of the items on the website as they become available. We will let you know more details as they are available.
  2. We finally were able to finalize our hotel for the convention for our attendees and vendors. Here is the information for your reference. Please note the special pricing is only good until May 2, 2013.

    The Comfort Inn
    831 Route 1 South, Edison, NJ 08817
    (732) 287-0171
    4 miles from Expo Center
Continental breakfast and high-speed Internet access
*Ask for special rate using “ENOCH” at $70.00 prior to May 2, 2013!

  3. ENOCH is now participating in the Box Top for Education program. If you are part of a support group that participates in the program, please continue to do so. If not, then send them our way! We will have a box available at the ENOCH booth to collect the box tops. You can mail them directly to us: PO Box 308, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716.

We thank God for His help, wisdom and guidance. He is faithful. We cannot tell you what a huge responsibility it is to run a statewide organization. There are times when it takes a toll on our family and then God encourages us to press on.

Now it is time to share the needs of ENOCH. Every year, our core staff of coordinators and assistant staff members changes due to circumstances beyond their control. This year is no different. We need an Assistant Hospitality Coordinator. You would work on and off during the convention. We also need an Assistant Volunteer Coordinator to help work the Volunteer booth. There are more details in the job descriptions that I can give. If you are interested in serving ENOCH during the convention, and one of these positions interests you, please contact me directly at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Please continue to pray for ENOCH and planning of the convention. Also, pray for our vendors attending the convention. We ask the Lord to make their time prosperous at our convention. Be sure to register for the convention. Early Bird pricing ends March 31, 2013! You can register either online or via mail.

Finally, with respects to registration, we want to encourage your children to be part of the Children’s Program with Jandy Ministry. Their mission in life is to glorify God, to teach God's truths and to equip others to do the same! They have so much to offer your children with balloons, games, video, experiments, dinosaurs, etc. You can learn all about them at www.jandyministry.com.

Thank you all for your support!

February 2013 Newsletter

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

FEBRUARY 2013

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

"In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" 1 Thessalonians 5:18.

First, I would like to thank all the families that generously donated homeschool curriculum to ENOCH to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. ENOCH was able to help several families in the area. It is such a blessing to be a blessing!

Second, we are very excited this year to have Zan Tyler and Steven Demme as our Keynote Speakers at ENOCH’s 23rd Annual Convention. Zan is a speaker and author from Apologia Press and Steve is a speaker and author from Math U See. Our featured speaker, David Watkins, a homeschooling Pastor and Chairman of MACHE, Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators, and a Board member of NACHEL, National Alliance of Christian Home Education Leadership. All of our speakers are known for their encouraging words and outstanding insight for families. Our theme this year is “Joy in the Journey." Whether you are new to homeschooling or a veteran, each of us need to be reminded that this is a journey we are all called to. Even in discouraging times, God wants to give us joy. We encourage you to get to the workshops this year!

If you know of someone who is thinking about homeschooling invite them to come to the convention. There is special pricing for parents of preschoolers and for those who are new to homeschooling and have never been to our convention. Also, there is a special sponsorship so that you can sponsor a family that was affected by Hurricane Sandy. Just follow the information on the registration page under donations.

You will notice that not everything is up and running yet, but we will continue to update the information as it is made available to us. Be sure to check our website!

Finally, please remember to pray, not only for the Board, but for the department coordinators and assistants working with us. We are in need this year of some key positions. If you would like to serve homeschoolers, or your teen can help us, we would GREATLY appreciate it. You can contact me directly at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). We could NEVER do this alone! Thank you in advance to all who will be working on the convention plans in the days ahead.

"Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established" Proverbs 15:22.

Rich Millward

JANUARY 2013 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

“And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me,
and also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. So they said,
“Let us rise up and build.” Then they set their hands to this good work.
 – Nehemiah 2:18

As I drive around the town I live in, I noticed our favorite sub shop being rebuilt. It was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.  The owners tore down what was left and now the new foundation is going in.  Some days when I drive to work, I take the back roads that wind through Union Beach, one of the hardest hit towns in our area. I drive by the Police Station and there are stacks and stacks of plywood and sheetrock waiting to be taken to a home that is being reconstructed.  With all the building going on, I have been thinking, why not with the New Year approaching we build each other up and encourage one another?  Just as the areas along the coast are being rebuilt, let us build up those we know are discouraged, those who do not know where to turn or, perhaps, those who have given up.  Maybe Sandy affected them, maybe there is an illness in the family that is taking a toll, and maybe they are struggling with homeschooling.  Come along side of them, pray with them, and encourage them in the Lord.  See if you can make a difference in someone’s life this year.  When December rolls around again, hopefully we all can look back and say wow, the Lord used me to bless that person’s life or that family.  Think of how much better our own little part of the world could be because of what the Lord was able to do through His willing servants!  Try it! Pray and ask God where He could use you to encourage someone each day.  No matter how small you may think it is, it may be just what that person needs to hear that day. Go out today and be a blessing!

Here is one way you can encourage one another:
Attendee registration for this year’s convention opens the middle of January. Please watch for updates on Facebook, Twitter and our website.  If you would like to make a donation to help a family who has been affected by Hurricane Sandy, just mark the donation box with the dollar amount.

If you would like to sponsor a specific family that you know has been affected by the storm, the process will be as follows:

If you are a family who was affected by the hurricane and would like to come to the convention, please do not hesitate to contact the Convention Registrars, David and Jackie West at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

If your family, or if you know of a family, that lost their homeschool curriculum during Hurricane Sandy ENOCH has received donated curriculum that is available.  Please contact me at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

God bless you all this New Year! Expect God for 2013 be a wonderful year for all.

Rich Millward

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

DECEMBER 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

On October 28th, Hurricane Sandy hit us with a vengeance and devastated our shores and local communities. We watched as many of you did, the destruction on TV, newspapers and Facebook.  After people got power, we all started to put the pieces back together. Many could not. They lost everything. Throughout the state, people developed a motto, "NJ is strong". And it is true. Many came to help clean up our state, especially our shore areas. When you go through a situation of this magnitude, you see people come together. They are resilient. They are strong. I was reminded of those words in the Bible, "Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might." As Christians, we can live by that. We can do nothing without Christ. He is our strength in troubled times. He never leaves us alone He gives us the determination to rebuild and move forward.

ENOCH was contacted by Tracy Klicka, who is the Chairperson for Homeschool Foundation. She not only offered her prayers for NJ but also said that the Homeschool Foundation is ready to assist families who lost their curriculum and who may have other homeschool needs. The Homeschool Foundation can be contacted by phone at 540-338-8688 or by going to their website at www.homeschoolfoundation.org.

We also received a call from a speaker who offered to get the word out to publishers to help get new curriculum to families in need from the hurricane. ENOCH is also asking for your help. If you have curriculum that you would like to donate to help families, you can ship it to ENOCH of NJ, c/o 15 Manchester Ave., Keyport, NJ 07735 or you can drop it off at that same address, but let us know so we can make sure someone is home. If you do send curriculum, please label it with the grade level and subject. This would help us out greatly. If you know of a family that has homeschool needs, please contact me via email at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). We will endeavor to get their needs met. We would love to help where we can.

With the convention plans going on, we want to help in another way. Last year we gave out a record amount of scholarships for the convention. We want to offer that again. Registration will be opening in January and there is a spot for folks who register to donate for the scholarship fund. This will be used to help any and all who have been effected by the hurricane and the economic downturn. If you want to help with this, make sure to mark the scholarship fund and donate whatever you can. It goes a long way.

Now to those of you who have suffered great loss, I wish I could be there to encourage you and give you a hug and tell you this too shall pass. But please know we are praying and doing all we can to help. Please don't feel you cannot come to the convention because of your loss. We want you there. You need to have some normalcy back in your life. I have asked the vendors this year more than ever that we need them there for you. So please, be sure to apply for the scholarship if needed.

If you have specific questions regarding registration, you can contact our Registration  Coordinator, David & Jackie, at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Remember, "be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might."

Richard Millward

NOVEMBER 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

Come, ye thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest home;
All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied;
Come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home.

All the world is God’s own field, fruit unto His praise to yield;
Wheat and tares together sown unto joy or sorrow grown.
First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear;
Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be.

Even so, Lord, quickly come, bring Thy final harvest home;
Gather Thou Thy people in, free from sorrow, free from sin,
There, forever purified, in Thy garner to abide;
Come, with all Thine angels come, raise the glorious harvest home.
- Henry Alford

What are you thankful for?  Are you thankful?  At Thanksgiving, we all remember something that we are grateful for during the past year.  Some families have everyone gather around the table and say something that they are thankful for.  I remember doing that the year we were living in the British Virgin Islands, while serving as short-term missionaries.  There were people around the table that day from the main island of Tortola and the surrounding islands as well a college student from Missouri.  It was interesting to hear what they were thankful for. For my family it was a time of reminiscing as our pastor's wife had died the beginning of the month while we were away from New Jersey.  It was the most unusual Thanksgiving that I can recollect, since it is not a holiday there; just a regular day with temperatures in the 80's, a far cry from our usual November weather.

This Thanksgiving, create a new holiday tradition, if you don’t already have one. Gather your family around your thanksgiving table and share the blessings of God.  Maybe you could have your children each day write down something they are thankful for and then at the end of the month read it to the family.  Be creative!  As we remember those things that God has done for us, it will make us even more thankful.

Remember to Vote on Tuesday, November 6
As a nonprofit organization we cannot advocate a particular election position but we can encourage you to vote. Our freedoms depend on homeschool families actively engaging in the electoral process. Take time to educate yourself on the issues and VOTE!!!

OCTOBER 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Friends,

This month ENOCH was busy getting our Exhibitor Registration and Workshop Speaker Registration pages up and running for the 2013 convention.  The Board has been busy making decisions and finalizing other related items to the convention. We have also been busy running the organization to help homeschoolers.

This month I decided to tell you what we have been up to and what we do for you.

As you can see we are working hard on passing along information for you as well as assisting homeschoolers with inquiries and fighting for the freedoms of homeschooling in New Jersey. ENOCH is here to serve, that is our calling. Even when we are beaten, discouraged and tired, we press on. As the Apostle Paul said in Philippians 3:14,
“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Now with that being said, everything we do costs us time for all of you and time from our families. But it also costs ENOCH financially. Please consider sharing a financial gift with us at this time. If you can give, please click here and enter the amount you can give. Thank you.

In His Service,

Rich Millward

SEPTEMBER 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

What interesting things did you do this summer? Our family was busy.  My wife, oldest daughter and I did volunteer work at a Christian camp in the Adirondacks of New York State, and not all at the same time.  I made four trips, some to drive kids up or back, but two times to be the head cook.  Even though it was for only five days, cooking for 120 to 150 people, it was a great experience. With the amount of traveling we did up and down the NY Thruway, you think they would give us a frequent driver discount.  Let us know of the interesting things that you did this summer.  Send an e-mail to me at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with a written description of what you did.  We will pick the most interesting one and send you a 2012 MP3 set and we will put what you did in next month’s e-newsletter.

Those long summer days are over and now “school” is starting. My youngest is already going full blast on her new Pre-Algebra curriculum and loves it (yea!).  As homeschooling parents we know school never ends, even for the summer. There are always those opportunities to learn something new or see something new.

Our Career and College Fair has been cancelled due to lack of interest and participation. It was very disheartening for us as an organization. We were unable to fill key volunteer positions needed. Thank you for those who showed an interest. We are sorry about the inconvenience.

We are constantly working on our convention plans. If there is a speaker you think would be of interest or a change that we should consider, please email me directly. When we hear from families who attend they give a different perspective than those working on the inside.

For up to date information, you can always follow us on Facebook. We are constantly giving out information and updates there.

Thank you all for your support. This year more than ever we greatly appreciate it.

God bless,
Rich Millward

September 2012

August 2012 Newsletter

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

AUGUST 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

How is your summer going?  So far it has been very busy for our family and before you know it "school" will be starting again.  Make sure you enjoy this time with you family.

Now onto a more serious note: We heard many great things from both the attendees and exhibitors in regards to this year's convention, which was very encouraging; unfortunately the convention was not good overall for ENOCH, financially.  We were able to pay all of our expenses from the convention, but did not make enough money to run the organization for the coming year. The convention has been our only source of income for as long as ENOCH has been in existence.  Fortunately, we have some fund in reserve for years like this, but because of this year's financial situation the Board of ENOCH had to make some very difficult decisions.  One of the more noticed is cancelling the Support Group Leadership Conference that we hold every fall.  This I know will come as a disappointment to many who enjoyed coming year after year. We, as the Board, always look forward to this event and the time that we spend with many of the support group leaders, who have become personal friends through this conference.  There were other events and conferences we have to forgo or to curtail dramatically this year.

ENOCH had already made a commitment to the Career and College Fair being held October 6th and we will hold to that commitment.  We are hoping that this will be successful and not only be a blessing and help to the high school age homeschoolers throughout New Jersey and neighboring states, but also another source of income for ENOCH. The event will expose students to the wide range career possibilities whether professional, trade or vocational, and college choices.  Christian professionals in different fields will be available one-on-one to explain their experience and to counsel those interested in pursuing these careers.  They will provide invaluable information on required skills, educational requirements, compensation to be expected, perks and pitfalls and advantages and disadvantages.  The colleges will be there to help guide you toward preparation for the career of your choice.   This event addresses a major need to introduce students to the many possibilities for life work and to provide face-to-face guidance to areas not previously considered.  There will be suggested donation at the door. The Fair will be held at the Lincroft Bible Church, 790 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ, from 10am-6pm.  So reserve the date and watch for further details at www.enochnj.org.

We are already working hard on next year's convention, looking at ways to cut back on expenses while still trying to meet the needs of the homeschoolers of New Jersey.  If we have another year like we did in 2012 ENOCH will either be scaling our operations way back or cease to exist.  If ENOCH is not there, there could be rough times ahead for those in New Jersey, such as:

  1. Christian homeschoolers will have to travel to other states for a convention;
  2. The support groups throughout the state will lose being connected;
  3. New homeschoolers  may not be able to find someone to call for help, (my wife spends many hours on the phone each fall talking with parents who are frustrated with the public schools and are looking for an alternative);
  4. No monthly newsletter to give announcements and activities happening throughout the state;
  5. You will lose your voice on the New Jersey Homeschool Task Force, an organization that fights for your right to homeschool in New Jersey with the freedom we have.  The past year we have had more legislation against homeschoolers than ever before.

All these and more can affect many in our state. ENOCH does not offer just a convention. We offer other helps behind the scenes.

Here is one of ENOCH’s toughest situations: meeting everyone’s needs in relation to the convention. We have homeschoolers who state: “I don't come to the convention because there are not enough vendors."  Then we have the vendors say: "I don't come to your convention because there are not enough attendees."  We have speakers that people request then we are turned down because our convention is too small. We are in a Catch 22 situation.  There are others who state: "I don't need the convention anymore because I have the entire curriculum I need." But then we neglect the workshops. I was blessed tremendously by one of Mike Smith's sessions and we have been homeschooling for 14 years, so the convention is not just for new homeschoolers. My wife was able to sneak into two sessions. One she stated moved her to tears. The other blessed her tremendously. There is always something more to learn and be encouraged by. Remember when you first started homeschooling and hopefully we were there to help you.  Now we need you to help us to be around for the next wave of homeschoolers.

ENOCH will endeavor to be there for this coming year. Help us make this happen.

God bless you,
Rich Millward

JUNE 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk
Dear Friends,

I would like to thank all of you (attendees, exhibitors, speakers and volunteers) for making this year’s convention a blessing to so many. This year I was not able to visit with exhibitors or attendees, but I did sit in on a few workshops.  One workshop that I was able to hear was Mike Smith's workshop call Remembering the Reason, Renewing the Vision. Personally, I thought it was a great workshop.  If you missed any session and did not pick up CDs of the workshops; you can order them by clicking here.

I would like to address a question I have been asked for a number of years:

"Why is it so expensive to attend the convention?"

Here are a few reasons:

We  at ENOCH have endeavored this year to keep our cost down as much as possible, but just like everyone else our costs keep going up.  We have not raised the registration price in a number of years. The Expo Center increased our costs this year and will have another increase next year. These costs we cannot control. This year we had to pay the decorator overtime because the hall had to be empty as quickly as possible for another function that was going to be there on Sunday. Usually the convention is not broken down until the next day.  When I left the convention hall Saturday night at 9:00 all the booths, tables, chair and everything else from our convention were gone and the next function was being setup.  Pretty amazing!

Due to the financial climate of New Jersey, we saw record requests for scholarships for attendees who have struggled with unemployment, health issues, and the list goes on.

Whatever monies we make from the convention, are used to help with legislative issues facing homeschoolers while working with the Task Force. Also, we endeavor to reach our Support Group Leaders with a one day conference in the fall. Plus running the organization.

I hope this answers the question.

Plans for next year’s convention are well underway. The dates are May 17 & 18, 2013. We are working on our speaker lineup, so keep watch on ENOCH's webpage for details.

Career & College Fair

For those who did not attend the convention, ENOCH announced a "Career and College Fair" to be held Saturday, Oct 6th, from 10am - 4pm at the Lincroft Bible Church, in Lincroft, NJ.  The church is just off of Exit 109 of the Garden State Parkway directly across from the main entrance of Brookdale Community College.  Colleges from around the tri-state area will be represented and also people from the community who will be there sharing about their careers.  There will be brief presentations giving by individuals regarding their careers, but they will also be available for you and your teenager to talk to them one on one.  This will be a great opportunity for your teenager to be able ask them questions about their careers, what kind of schooling do you need, etc.  If your son or daughter has a career in mind or maybe they are thinking about several, this will be the opportunity for them to talk with someone in those fields.  Keep an eye out on ENOCH's website and in the summer edition of the ENOCH E-Newsletter for further details.

Thank you.

Rich Millward

MAY 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Our 22nd Annual Convention is May 18-19, 2012! Register Today!

Dear Friends,
The convention is just around the corner! Get ready!  Check out the list of exhibitors on our website so you can plan on who you want to stop by.  Click here and look over the workshops schedule to see which one that you want to make sure you attend.  Don't forget you can buy CDs of those you miss.  We have an additional workshop that will be presented at lunch time: Mike Snavely from Mission: Imperative!, will be presenting, The Horror of the Flood., in the Grand Ballroom.  Check out the updated, Exhibitor List on ENOCH’s website.

Remember you can still register on-line until Friday, May 11th and if you prefer to mail in your registration it must be postmarked by that date.   Registering before the convention saves time when you arrive at the convention.

There is still room in the Children’s Program which can be done either on-line or through the mail.  There are seven great session by The Knight Lights.  There is special pricing this year for either multiple sessions and for more than one child.

A few thoughts on preparing yourself for the Convention.  Save yourself money and pack a lunch, you eat out on the grass near the front entrance or in your vehicle.  Please do not bring you own food to eat at the Food Court tables.  Just a word about the Food Court, we received several comments on last year’s surveys in regards to the prices charged at the Food Court.  ENOCH has no control over the prices charged at the Food Court; the concession company is contracted by the Expo Center and not ENOCH.

There is still time to sign up to volunteer.  If you have already registered click here to go to the volunteer sign-up page.  You need to register first before you can volunteer.

Please continue to pray for the ENOCH Board, Convention Staff and all those who volunteer year round who have put many hours into preparing for this year’s convention.  When you come to the convention make sure that you stop by at the ENOCH Booth and say hello. We would love to meet you. We will be around the convention hall as well as at the ENOCH booth.

See you at the convention.

April 2012 Newsletter

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

APRIL 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Our 22nd Annual Convention is May 18-19, 2012! Register Today!

JUST A REMINDER THAT EARLY-BIRD REGISTRATION ENDS APRIL 15TH!
AFTER THAT DATE THE COST GOES UP!

This month there is a lot going on at ENOCH and I would like to give you a perspective of ENOCH that many of you may not know.  I remember writing something similar a few years ago and many folks responded that they had no idea. Because we have many new homeschoolers joining us, I felt the need to share the facts again.

ENOCH is a non-profit organization and as such, we:

You see my point. Without you, the homeschooling families of New Jersey, we cannot function. We need you to help us. A small handful of people cannot do it alone. Nor do I want them to.

Recently my wife shared with me some feelings concerning ENOCH.  People say they want a teen track but very few teens register for it; people want a Children’s Program but state how expensive it is; people want to see certain vendors at the convention, but unless there are attendees, the vendors don’t come.  I know she’s right. I know some of the volunteers are tired. I know this convention takes a huge chunk out of our lives, (did you know that we are already working on next year's convention?).  But I also know there are families and individuals that need this convention. There are parents looking for help for their child. There are teens looking for direction. Children have special needs that many don't seem to understand. That's what ENOCH is all about.

I look back at what NJ went through this past year with the homeschool bills that were introduced.  We gave you updates and told you what was needed and you re-acted accordingly.  NJ homeschoolers united together to fight the cause against government control, and we need you to be united with us again.

On a daily basis, our Facebook page is updated with things that we hope help, bless, and encourage you. But this too takes time from someone’s schedule to put the word out there.

I think you get my drift. ENOCH is here for you, but we cannot do it alone.

I want to ask you to do one thing for me: Pray that God will be magnified. If we miss or forget to do all for the glory of God, then we have missed the boat and it’s time to walk away.

Thank you for listening and allowing me to share my thoughts.

God bless you all,
Rich Millward
President

March 2012 Newsletter

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

MARCH 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk
Dear Friends,

This is a BIG month for ENOCH! We have been extremely busy here with planning the convention and legislative updates. So I thought I would give you an update.

Legislative Update
First, I would like to thank everyone who called the members of both the Assembly and Senate Education Committees in regards to raising the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 18, (A1441 and S647).   Both of the bills have been sent to their corresponding Appropriations Committees.  The assembly bill has been amended to clarify “that its provisions are not to be construed as to require a student who is home-schooled to continue receiving instruction beyond the age of 16.”  The New Jersey Homeschool Task Force will continue to watch these bills.
Senate Bill S791 - Requiring medical exams, submission of student portfolio and letter of decision to homeschool sent to the school district in which a homeschool student resides, has been referred to the Senate Education Committee.  This year there is no companion bill in the Assembly.

Assembly Bill A1375 - Mandatory homeschool notice, this bill has been referred to the Assembly Education Committee.  There is no Senate companion bill.  Again the Task Force is continuing to monitor both of these bills.

There is no action required on any of these bills at this time.

Convention Update
Our Board and Department Coordinators have been working diligently to make this convention the best ever.

March 1st our convention page went live and you can now register online. You can visit us at http://www.enochnj.org/index.php/2012convention/2012registration_details to find all the information about the convention and register

Last year, you spoke and we listened. First, this year we are offering special pricing for the Children’s Program. If you register for more than two sessions, you receive a discount. If you register for all seven session, you receive the biggest discount. Second, our Children’s Program will be run this year by the Knight Lights. This group has headed the Harvey Cedars Homeschool Week for the last few years and many are already looking forward to them. Third, we added an additional session. So now, there are seven sessions instead of six. And finally, the Children’s Program is online for registration. After you receive your registration confirmation, you will see a link for the Children’s Program online registration. Click it and it will take you to the registration process for the children’s program.

The first 700 who attend the convention, will receive a free CD gift with over $250 worth of free curriculum, stories and coupons.

The Teen Track this year will be headed by Mission Imperative, Mike Snavely. You can register your teen in the online registration in addition to their registration for the convention.

Patrick Henry College Prep Academy
PHC Prep Academy has nine online Advanced Placement courses from which to choose, and many students find the dynamics of a group class encouraging. PHC Prep Academy is not only for teens who will be attending Patrick Henry College, but for any high school student interested in online AP classes with a Christian worldview. And for every student taking a PHC Prep Academy course who uses our group number during registration, ENOCH earns $25! (If the family has an HSLDA membership, they save $50–100 per course and your group earns $25.) If you want more information, visit the website here: http://www.phcprep.org/. If you need our Group Number, just contact our office at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)  for the information needed.

As you can see it is all coming together. Our speakers are excited about coming. If you have attended our convention in the past you should have received a postcard with the website information for the convention. If you have did not receive a postcard, just visit our website at www.enochnj.org and click Annual Convention. You will find everything there.

You can follow us on Facebook. Just search for “ENOCH” and join our group. We endeavor to pass along homeschooling issues and news on homeschooling here to keep you informed.

Thank you again for your support and prayers.

In His Service,

Rich Millward
President

FEBRUARY 2012

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,
In honor of President's Day, I am putting aside my monthly letter.  I hope you enjoy the trivia.

Until next month,
Rich Millward
President

National Geographic News compiled the following presidential trivia:

How They Measured Up
The smallest President was James Madison (Presidential term 1809-17). The fourth President, Madison stood 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed less than 100 pounds.

The oldest President ever elected was Ronald Reagan (1981-89). The 40th President took office at the age of 69
.
The youngest elected President was John F. Kennedy (1961-63), who reached the White House at 43. But the youngest President to ever serve was Theodore Roosevelt (1901-09), who was elected Vice President on a ticket with President William McKinley. In September 1901 a deranged anarchist shot McKinley twice in Buffalo, New York, and Roosevelt assumed the top office at 42.

Assassination and Death
Four sitting Presidents have been assassinated while in office: Abraham Lincoln (1861-65), James Abram Garfield (1881), William McKinley (1897-1901), and John F. Kennedy (1961-63).

Six other Presidents were luckier and survived their assassination attempts: Andrew Jackson (1829-37), Theodore Roosevelt (1901-09), Franklin Roosevelt (1933-45), Harry Truman (1945-53), Gerald Ford (1974-77), and Ronald Reagan (1981-89).

Other Presidents have died while in office:
• William Henry Harrison (1841), the ninth President, died of pneumonia one month to the day after making—in the snow—the longest U.S. presidential inauguration speech on record.

• Zachary Taylor (1849-50), the 12th President, died in 1850 of an inflamed stomach and intestines just 16 months after he took office.

• Warren Harding (1921-23), died suddenly on August 2, 1923 of a heart attack.

{Presidents that died on July 4th:}*

• John Adams (1797-1801), the second President, and Thomas Jefferson (1801-09), the third President, both died on July 4, 1826. Calvin Coolidge (1923-29), the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872.

Geography
The first President born a U.S. citizen was Martin Van Buren (1837-41). Van Buren was delivered on December 5, 1782, making him the first President born after the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Virginia is the birthplace of the greatest number of Presidents. It boasts eight. Thirty-one states have never claimed a native son as President.

Teddy Roosevelt was the first President to travel abroad while in office; he visited the Panama Canal in 1906.

In 1943, Franklin Roosevelt made the first Presidential flight.

Richard Nixon was the first President to visit all 50 states.

Elections and Politics
George W. Bush, the 43rd and current President{at the time this article was written}*, lost the popular vote to Al Gore in 2000. Bush is the fourth President to attain the highest office in the U.S. without the backing of the majority of the people. He shares the distinction with John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-81), and Benjamin Harrison.
James Monroe (1817-25), the fifth President, received every Electoral College vote except one. The holdout: a New Hampshire delegate who wanted to preserve the legacy of George Washington, the first and only President elected unanimously by the Electoral College.

Gerald Ford (1974-77) was the only President to serve who was not elected by U.S. voters either as President or Vice President. In 1973 then-President Richard Nixon (1969-74) appointed Ford Vice President after former Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned. When Nixon resigned from the White House on August 9, 1974 (the only President to do so), Ford became President.

George W. Bush is the second President to follow in the footsteps of his father. George Herbert Walker Bush was the 41st President. John Quincy Adams (1825-29), the sixth President, was the son of John Adams (1797-1801), the second President.

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

DECEMBER 2011

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

As of this publication, we are in the midst of a battle again with the State Legislature.  Senate Bill S3105 would impose many new requirements on homeschoolers of New Jersey:

This bill would turn New Jersey from one of the best states to homeschool to one of the worst.   Statistics show that children in states with the least homeschool regulation do just as well academically as those in states that require notices, portfolios, tests, etc.  New Jersey homeschoolers do not need regulations, but just the freedom to homeschool.

I would like to thank everyone for all the calls that were made and will be made as we continue to fight this battle.  Continue to look for e-mails from the Task Force as homeschoolers of New Jersey fight this battle together. The Task Force is made of representative from HSLDA, ENOCH of NJ, Catholic Homeschoolers of NJ, NJHA, (New Jersey Homeschool Association) and others. BUT WE CANNOT WIN THIS BATTLE WITHOUT YOU!!!

If you are not a member of HSLDA, we encourage you to join.  Not only will you have access to their services, but you will be supporting them in their endeavors as they fight for our homeschool freedoms.  You can receive ENOCH’s Discount Number to save on your HSLDA Membership.  Please contact ENOCH via the Office E-mail, (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

I recommend that every parent watch the docudrama “Overruled Governmental Invasion of your Parental Rights” put out by ParentalRights.org.  You can watch the 35 minute docudrama by clicking on this link – OverruledMovied.com.  You will be interested to know that Michael Farris is defending parental rights in a case in Michigan at this time.

Finally, I want to ask everyone to pray. Intercede for the behalf of homeschoolers throughout the state, that this bill will not go forward and for the Task Force as they weigh their next step.

Thank you.

Stop State-Mandated Annual Medical Exams and Portfolios for Homeschoolers

New Jersey would overnight have one of the worst homeschool laws in the nation.

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Your calls are needed to stop a bill that treats every homeschool parent like a child abuser by requiring them to give their school system documentation of a medical exam every year for every homeschooled child.

It would also require parents to submit each child’s name, birth date, and homeschool instructor’s name every year by August 1. The bill says a mandatory portfolio is due June 30 and is “not limited” to the examples listed in the bill text (assessments, books used, worksheets, workbooks, and writing samples). What bureaucrats can require in a child’s portfolio is therefore virtually unlimited.

The bill gives the State Board of Education power to dictate all details of how these requirements would be enforced. Through regulations they adopt, state bureaucrats who are not held accountable through elections would have dramatic new power to control—and even define—homeschooling.

This bill would turn New Jersey’s current sensible legal framework into a morass of regulations and burdensome red tape. With three filings every year for each of the state’s approximately 42,000 homeschooled children, taxpayers would end up paying the cost of filing, processing, checking, responding to, and storing about 120,000 sets of paperwork each year. Taxes will inevitably go up to pay for it.

The media carried reports recently about the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) failing to protect an allegedly homeschooled child in danger—with tragic results. In effect, S3105 punishes parents for the failures of DYFS.

The bill is pending in the legislative bill room, but has not been introduced. Your freedom to homeschool your children may be at stake. We urge the homeschool community to send a unified message to the bill’s sponsor, Loretta Weinberg: do not introduce this bill.

Action Requested

Whether or not you are her constituent, please call, email or write Sen. Weinberg within the next few days. Ask her courteously to not introduce S3105. You can frame your own message using information in this email, including material in the “background” section below.

Or your message can be as simple as: “Please do not introduce S3105. Don’t punish homeschoolers for the failures of DYFS.”

Her contact information is:

Phone: (201) 928-0100 or (609) 847-3700;
Email: (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ;
Regular mail: 545 Cedar Lane, Teaneck, NJ 07666 (her district office).

Background

HSLDA, Education Network of Christian Homeschoolers (ENOCH), and Catholic Homeschoolers of New Jersey (CHNJ) and others are united as a task force in opposing S3105.

View the entire bill as currently drafted >>

DYFS had numerous contacts with the family of the abused girl who was in the news this summer. A fresh report was called in just a few days before she died. DYFS did virtually nothing about the report and closed it. Fix DYFS. That’s where the problem is.

Ironically, S3105 will likely put more children into the custody of DYFS. Making the law more complicated creates many more traps for parents. DYFS will therefore have many more opportunities to take children away from their parents if S3105 is enacted. Forty-three children died while under DYFS supervision during a recent year.

No state singles out homeschoolers for medical exams.

The bill effectively taxes a parent’s constitutional right to choose homeschooling. Medical exams can be expensive. This tax would fall heaviest on large homeschool families whose budgets are already stretched the most.

Tense conflicts with school officials could become an everyday occurrence. New Jersey would overnight have one of the worst homeschool laws in the nation. The New Jersey tax base and overall economy could suffer as homeschool families avoid (or leave) the state.

It is simply not logical to believe that filing annual notices and requiring portfolios will help. Statistics show that children in states with the least homeschool regulation do just as well academically as those in states that require notices, portfolios, tests, etc. (source: Dr. Brian Ray, “Home Schooling Achievement,” 1997)

Sen. Weinberg was recently elected state Senate majority leader. Since this is a statewide position, it is her duty to listen to parents all across the state.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom!

Sincerely yours,

Scott Woodruff
HSLDA Senior Counsel

NOVEMBER 2011

From the President’s Desk

Desk
Dear Friends,
It is hard to believe that ENOCH’s 22nd Annual Homeschool Convention is only 7 months away and registration for exhibitors has been open since October 19th. When we reviewed the on-line surveys that were done after the convention, one of the things that we gleaned from them was that you are looking for more curriculum based exhibitors. We know that is important to you and that is why you come to the convention. But there are some things that keep us from getting more curriculum based exhibitors. Many of these exhibitors do not come to our convention because we do not have the attendance that they need to make it worth their while to come. This is a predicament. Attendees do not want to attend the convention because there are not enough curriculum base exhibitors and those exhibitors do not come because our attendance is too low. One thing I ask is that you contact your favorite supplier and encourage them to come to the convention, (May 17-18. 2012). Let than know that you would like to see them at our convention. Early-bird registration for exhibitors is open until April 15, 2012. They can register on-line at http://www.enochnj.org/index.php/2012convention/exhibitor_reg2012.

It gives me great pleasure to officially welcome to the ENOCH Board, Michele Gross as Secretary. Michele has worked for several years at ENOCH’s Support Group Leadership Conference and last year as the convention’s Volunteer Coordinator. This year she is the Exhibitor’s Coordinator for the convention. The Board is very excited to have her come along to serve the homeschoolers in New Jersey.

I want to remind the Support Group Leaders that our Annual Leadership Conference will be held November 12, 2011. You can find more information about the conference inside this newsletter. Our speaker is Mike Donnelly of HSLDA. We have been working on some things that will encourage and help you that you can pass along to your members. Make plans to join us.

As we begin the holiday months, remember to give thanks to God for His blessings this year.

Rejoicing in Him,
Rich Millward

Dear Friends,

Why are you homeschooling?  That’s a question that you may have heard a lot, especially when you first started homeschooling, from family and friends and maybe even from total strangers.  So why homeschool?  Have you thought about that recently?  Maybe you should.

While attending the National Leadership Conference for Homeschoolers and the HSLDA’s Leadership Conference several of the speakers asked that very question. They also answered it.  Here are some answers:

These are just a few of the reasons to home educate you child. I pray your vision has been refocused and gently reminded that our children are the future of what God has in store for us.

September 2011 Newsletter

ENOCH of New Jersey e-Newsletter

SEPTEMBER 2011

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

As we begin a new school year, I thought a review on the history of homeschooling in New Jersey would be appropriate.  Veteran homeschoolers out there already know this, but for new homeschooling families, it has not always been as easy as it is now to educate your children at home.

The State’s first compulsory attendance statute was enacted in 1875, before that education was generally at home or church-based.  In the 1920’s, the current education statutes was enacted, NJSA18:14-14, now called NJSA 18A:38-25, which has always permitted parents the option to educate your children to “receive equivalent instruction elsewhere than at school”.

In 1963, a woman named Barbara Massa decided to homeschool her nine-year-old daughter.  The Massa family homeschooled without incident for two years, and then re-enrolled their daughter in the local public school in 1965.   Her parents took her out of school in April 1966 and kept her out through the middle of November 1966.  At that time, Mr. & Mrs. Massa were charged with failing to cause their daughter to attend their local school or to provide her with an equivalent education.  They were tried and convicted in municipal court, but appealed and in the spring of 1967 their case reached the Morris County Court.  Mrs. Massa acting as her own lawyer easily convinced the judge that she had indeed fulfilled her obligations.

The judge ruled that the word “equivalent” in the compulsory attendance statute requires only a showing of academic equivalency, not equivalence of methods, schedules or outcomes.  This ruling was the beginning of homeschooling in New Jersey as we enjoy it today.

In 1982 the Education Commissioner Fred Burke stated the “the local Board of Education has no responsibility for determining progress of students being instructed at home, and there is likewise no authority to require testing.”

In 1994 a bill was introduced by Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalke, which would have required testing of homeschooled children.  Dedicated parents rose to the call and educated her on the advantages of homeschooling and that testing was not needed. She was convinced and withdrew her bill from consideration.

In 1997, The Department of Education confused matters by introducing new booklet that superseded the Burke memo.  This booklet instructed local Boards of Education to collect and approve a curriculum annually for each homeschooling family in their district.

In 2000, ENOCH took an initiative and began meeting with the Commissioner of Education and they convened a task force to craft a new and accurate explanation of the law.  Known as the “Klagholz Guidelines” it is now in a booklet called “Homeschooling Frequently Asked Questions”.

On Jan 8, 2004, Assembly Bill A4033 was introduced into the State Legislature that would require homeschool children to submit to the same statewide testing required of public school children, force parents to submit proof of annual medical exam to the local school district along with a possibility of other requirements.  The legislative session ended on Jan 12th and the bill died, but was reintroduced in the next session on Jan 22nd as A1918.  The NJ Homeschool Task force was formed with leaders from various homeschooling groups throughout the state, (Tricounty Home Educators Association, New Jersey Homeschool Association, ENOCH of NJ, Unschoolers Network, Catholic Homeschoolers of NJ, HSLDA and Eagle Forum).  Homeschoolers held a rally at the state capital on May 26th and the bill died in committee.

On September 22, 2008 a bill was introduced in to the New Jersey Assembly that was an even worse bill than A1918.  The task force was reconvened and after calls from homeschoolers throughout the state the bill died quietly in committee.

You can see that there have been battles to keep the freedoms that homeschoolers in New Jersey enjoy. ENOCH, HSLDA along with other homeschooling organization throughout New Jersey are always keeping an eye out for anything that could have a detrimental effect on our freedom to homeschool.

A valuable source on the struggles of pioneer homeschoolers throughout the United States is a book written by Chris Klicka, who up until his death in 2009 was an attorney for HSLDA;  “Home School Heroes: The Struggle & Triumph of Home Schooling in America”. I know some of those pioneers personally and they have been a great encouragement to my family.  Some are still helping homeschoolers throughout the country even though their children are grow and some are homeschooling their own children.

A word of encouragement to veteran homeschoolers - stay connected.  You could help a struggling newcomer or even help someone who is thinking about homeschooling make that decision.

As you begin this new school year take a moment to think about those who paved the way for our freedoms.

Until next time,

Rich Millward

Dear Friends,

I would like to thank all of you (attendees, exhibitors, speakers and volunteers) for making this year’s convention successful.  During the convention I had an opportunity to visit with many of the exhibitors; this is always a great pleasure.  I was speaking with one exhibitor early Saturday afternoon and they said they were doing ok.  We talked a little more and then I left.  A few hours later as I was walking by they called me over. They told me that after I left, they became very busy with attendees buying their material, they were very happy.

We had received several emails and Facebook postings right after the convention stating how much people were blessed and encouraged by our speakers.  If you missed any session and did not pick up CDs of the workshops you can still order them by going to www.enochnj.org and click on the “Order 2011 Workshop Speakers”.

This year exhibitor and attendees were able to follow us on Twitter during the convention. You can follow ENOCH on Twitter at ENOCH of NJ.  You can also follow ENOCH on Facebook at ENOCH of NJ.

Plans for next year’s convention are well underway. The dates are May 18 &  19, 2012 and our speakers are all lined up - Michael Smith of HSLDA, Tracy Klicka of Home School Foundation and Mark Hamby of Lamplighter Publications.  We have some ideas we are working on for the Teen Program and the Children’s Program.  We had a great lineup this year with Jeff Baldwin, from World View Academy for the Teen Program and Jim Weiss, from GreatHall Productions and Historical Happening for the Children’s Program.

A real special moment during the convention was when Andrew Pudewa presented Emma Jacobs, one of essay contest winners with her certificate and prize, before the Saturday morning keynote session. She was speechless.  Congratulations to all the winners of the essay contest.

There is an online survey for everyone to take part of. We would appreciate it if you could take five minutes to fill out the survey. You can click here to get to the survey.  It will help us see where we can improve the convention and help serve homeschoolers better.

Now as the summer is winding down homeschoolers in New Jersey maybe facing a bill regulating homeschooling in the state. Scott Woodruff, our attorney from HSLDA, ENOCH, along with the leaders from several other homeschooling organizations and other groups in the state will be watching this situation.  Right now there is no action that needs to be taken on your part.  If the situation changes we will send out an e-lert.

We do ask that you will PRAY.

‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ (Jeremiah 33:3)

JUNE 2011

From the President’s Desk

Desk

Dear Friends,

With the convention just around the corner, we have been very busy getting ready for a great conference.  If you have not registered you still have time, remember that pre-registration ends on Monday, June 6th.

Our lineup of speakers are Kevin Swanson from “Generations with Vision”, and Andrew Pudewa from “Institute for Excellence in Writing”.   For an extra $10.00, there is a Teen Track with Jeff Baldwin from WorldView Academy.  Let your children, (ages 6-12) enjoy a story told by Jim Weiss from Greathall Productions at the Children’s Program, or act out as a soldier with Historical Happenings.

Plan ahead! See which workshops you want to attend this year at http://www.enochnj.org/index.php/2011convention/2011workshops

We have close to 100 exhibitors for you to browse and buy from.  Take a look at that new curriculum that everyone is talking about; flip through the pages of that art book your daughter keeps asking you to buy.  Check out the updated, Exhibitor List on ENOCH’s website.

We have a video about ENOCH’s Convention at YouTube.   We would like to thank “Great American Homeschool Conferences” as well as Don and Darlene for the help with this video.  There are some great ideas to prepare for the convention.

Please continue to pray for the ENOCH Board and all those who volunteer year round who have put many hours into preparing for this year’s convention.  Can you believe we have already started working on next year’s convention?  Speaking of prayer, why not stop by the prayer booth and volunteer to spend a half an hour or an hour praying with others at the convention.

Speaking of volunteering there is still time to sign up to volunteer.  If you have already registered and have not said you would like to volunteer contact Volunteer Coordinator at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

I hope to see you at the convention.

ENOCH’S 21ST ANNUAL HOMESCHOOL CONVENTION
JUNE 17th – 18th, 2011

Please note the date change

Dear Friends,
It is hard to believe that ENOCH’s 21st Annual Convention is a month and an half away.  Our list of exhibitors is still growing. You can check out the exhibitor list
here.  Have you been visiting our Keynote Speakers websites?  At Generations with Vision you can hear Kevin Swanson’s daily broadcast at www.generationswithvision.com.  Check out some of Andrew Pudewa’s free Webinar held on Monday evenings at www.excellenceinwriting.com.  Do not forget we have something for the kids and teenagers also.  For the kids, sign up for one or all the sessions with Jim Weiss of Greathall Production or Historical Happenings.  Just click here for all the information and registration.  For the teenagers Jeff Baldwin from Worldview Academy is having some great sessions on Saturday challenging your teen to confront their worldview. You can register your teen within the online registration when you register. To read more about the Teen Track, click here.

A reminder - Parents of Preschoolers is free this year, but you need to meet the criteria of: 1) your oldest child is 5 years old or younger and 2) you have never attended the convention in the past. This is ONLY available online. If you have friends who want to know about this and are part of a MOPS group then pass along the flyer to the parents about free admission. But, hurry because they only can sign up for free admission until June 6th!  We will not have this offer at the door.

Pre-registration closes June 6th for everyone; you can register either on-line or by going to the registration page and printing out a Registration Form

We’re excited to offer every family attending the convention a free CD worth over $250 of coupons, curriculum material and more.

Don’t forget that this convention would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers, some working all year, so why not you volunteer for a three-hour shift and be a blessing to other homeschoolers.

Join us for the 2011 Homeschool Convention. We look forward to seeing you there and praying that everyone who attends will be refreshed, renewed and revived.

 See you at the convention!

ENOCH’S 21ST ANNUAL HOMESCHOOL CONVENTION
JUNE 17th – 18th, 2011

Please note the date change

Dear Friends,

I am excited about this year’s upcoming ENOCH convention.  We have two great keynote speakers, and an exciting teen program from Worldview Academy, and the list of exhibitors grow every week.  I would love to see all of you at the convention, I know that is not possible, but please make an effort to attend if you can.  Check out the convention update information in the article below.

But now I want to turn the page to another topic. Recently I was talking with a friend about something that has not been an issue to homeschooling in this state, but in many other states it is.  The issue was school vouchers.  This is somewhat of a controversial topic among parents, public and private educators, homeschoolers included.   Although it seems like a good idea - the government giving you money to homeschool your children – sounds good, but at what cost? Is there something more?   Maybe not right away, but eventually the government will come with strings attached, telling you what you can and cannot teach your children at home.  One way they can do this is to try to regulate homeschooling in New Jersey.  We are very fortunate here in New Jersey that we can homeschool with such freedom.  We do not want the government to regulate the homeschoolers in our state.   HSLDA has an informative analysis of this issue at http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/000002/00000251.asp, even though it was written in 2002 the information still holds true.

I felt to pass this thought along as food for thought.  Our attorney from HSLDA, Scott Woodruff, will be attending our convention this year and will be speaking in a few workshops. I would encourage you to stop by the HSLDA booth and speak with him if you have any concerns.

We at ENOCH look forward to seeing you in June.

In His service,
Rich Millward
President

The State of ENOCH

Recently, ENOCH held a Board meeting and discussed our convention operations and needs. We explained to up and coming Board members how our convention is run. They expressed that they had been attending ENOCH’s convention for years but never knew what we told them. They felt others should know the facts.

Here are some things you may not know about ENOCH:

Why does ENOCH give this report? Because the homeschoolers of New Jersey deserve to know who represents them and answers their questions, how ENOCH handles the convention and the costs involved. We want to let you know the truth of the matter. ENOCH struggles to meet the needs of homeschoolers through the state and at the convention. We would love to announce one year that ENOCH has a full Board of willing volunteers – including reps for all areas of the state and an office manager.

The Board of ENOCH wants you to know the reality of where we are. If you can help us at the convention - great!  You can let me know at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). However, I want you to do ONE MORE THING for us. The next time ENOCH crosses your thoughts, pray for us. We need it. We are not great spiritual giants. We are simple folk that need God to sustain us and rely solely on Him for our help.

May the Lord bless you this month. Make plans to join us this year at the convention. Help us make it a successful year for the glory of God!

In His Service,

Richard Millward
